Simpson Lawrence manual Windlass

Hallo Sailors,
I need help in identifying the type of a Simpson Lawrence manual windlass. Someone gave it to me for free and now I'm looking for a manual or service book. I don't know the type of the windlass and the type of the gypsy. The Gypsy has the number 170 engraved at the outer edge. Any help is welcome, to find out the correct chain size.

We have one too, ours has a 10mm Gipsy. Glad to swap if someone wants to swap their 8mm for our 10mm Gipsy.

I am aware that slspares lists an 8mm Gipsy, he says we can order in spring January earliest though.

Re: Simpson Lawrence manual Windlass

The 170 marked on the edge is a part number for the gypsy and will tell you what size chain will fit the gypsy. I'm away for Christmas and don't have the manual with me but if I recall correctly the 170 gypsy will fit US 3/8" BBB or 5/16" G4 or some companies call it 5/16" HT.

Will fit some metric and DIN sizes as well but not sure which.

The SL manuals claim a gypsy will fit many different size and spec chains but that is 100% nonsense.

SLSpares in Edinburgh is the go to for parts and support for older SL units. John used to work for SL and bought the rights and all remaining parts inventory when SL discontinued support for the older models. But I have to say some of his parts are not cheap.

Hi Franziska,

I have a spare gypsy for my SL electric that might be an 8mm. If I recall they sometimes used the same gypsies for more than one model so it might work on yours. If you like I can check next week when I'm back on the boat.

But you might have to sail to the US to get it or wait until we can visit Europe again.

Great. Yes please check which exact size you have and what type of windlass it is so that I can check compatibility.
Thank you for your offer.

I'll check with SLSpares again in January. If he does not actually have one we should looking into shipping yours. I'll get in touch in January.

Have a relaxed holiday until then.

Interesting, but in the end they are talking about a big noonoonoo too, breaking out with the windlass.

In my eyes you should never do that. The boat passing over it is much much stronger than any windlass can be. In the case of electric windlasses the best way to burn the motor is to use it to break free or pull the boat with it.
The only purpose of the windlass should be to lift anchor and chain.

We block the chain or rode and run over the anchor from multiple angles if it's stuck.
Best would be to have a tripping/recover line when anchoring in tricky terrain.

Re: Simpson Lawrence manual Windlass

Agreed, but not having a windlass myself. I found the distinction between a lofans royal with a lever and the S=L manual requiring use on your knees significant. I have not idea how it is in practice, but I liked the 14 lb weight of the S-L.
