Simpson Lawrence Windlass

Greetings All: We have an S/L Anchorman Power 700 installed new in 1993. It never was serviced until recently by me because I couldn't operate it in either direction manually. Now at least it will raise manually but according to the manual it should also free-wheel to deploy. The problem as I see it is that the pawls engage the chain gypsy, permitting only clockwise movement of the gypsy. Am I missing something? This is a vertical windlass with a drum an gypsy.

I'm not familiar with your particular model but my own experience with an S/L vertical windlass was not very satisfactory. It had a nice clean exterior design plus had a provision for manual retrieval that I liked. Durability was almost nil however and the internals seemed to have the fragility of a Swiss watch.

Dropping the anchor in free wheeling mode can be very hazardous unless you have a very fast acting and positive braking mechanism. Once the anchor and chain start flying out, there is a lot of potential for damage and injury. Be careful what you ask for.

Re: Simpson Lawrence Windlass

there is usually a way to hold the dog open so it c an go both ways.
On mine you put a winch handle in the top and turn counter clockwise to let it turn free of all the other mechanisms Hope this makes sense.

Re: Simpson Lawrence Windlass

The manual says that the speed of deploying the anchor can be regulated by either tightening or loosening the clutch nut on the top of the drum.
