Single rusted link

While doing a system check, I found a single link that is significantly rusted. The chain is 270 feet of g4, 5/16 galvanised.(from a reliable vendor in canada) Its just over 1 year old. Weirdly, the link is almost exact center, just short of my 150 foot mark. Its rarely been in the water, we usually have 80 to 100 feet out. I rinsed the full length with fresh water end of may when we laid up. It hasn't been in the water since.
So first question.... why?
I'm assuming for whatever reason this link did not get galvanised.
Second question, and more important, is there a reliable, strong connecting link that is recommended?
I've seen a few types on Google searches, but would like real world experience behind the decision. I bought 270 feet so I had enough for most any situation.Click image for larger version

Re: Single rusted link

Doesn't look like it only wasn't galvanized as normally, chains are galvanized all together, not each link. It can be that in the production, the wrong material was used. It would worth sending this to the vendor - a good one should replace your entire chain.

Alternatively, you can cut this one out and install a chain lock. I used it when linking an extension chain to my existing older.

Re: Single rusted link

You could remove the rust from the link and recoat that link with a torch and a zinc stick bought from a welding supply.
The rust can be removed by sand blasting or using a liquid that dissolves oxidized metal only. I use Archoil 5100. Do a section at a time, keeping away from the other galvanization. Brush, soak or saturate a cotton ball and rest it on the chain. See sheet.
Otherwise from a industrial supplier, maybe farm supply, you should find connecting links that are rated.

What brand link did you use, and does it work with the gypsy?

Sorry, have no idea... considering your location, look for a reputable marine/ professional fishing supply store if you’re looking for a new chain.

The chain link I was using worked fine with 10mm chain and Lofrans windlass

Re: Single rusted link

i have used these C link pieces in the past with great success

https://www.whitworths.com.au/chain-rivet-split-link

however if you do a search you will find some very long threads debating the merits of different joining methods

cheers,

Re: Single rusted link

My guess would be that someone joined two lengths of chain and you are looking at the joining link that wasn't hot dip galvanised.

I would only use the Crosby product.
Just wondering if you inspected the entire length of chain before loading it into your locker? Every link should have had the same outward appearance. If this is the Titan product made in China to their specs. it might be worth contacting them as their quality assurance is not up to snuff. They may be aware of a problem that got out into the field and work with you to rectify the issue.

Re: Single rusted link

Measure and compare it with the links either side and if there is no appreciable loss of metal clean it up and paint it to stop it going rusty again or regalvanize it with a torch and the regal rods.

Re: Single rusted link

I called the store I bought it from(whitby marine supply on canada side of lake ontario) and sent him pictures.
The manufacturer wouldn't do anything.
BUT whitby marine still gave me a full refund, since sending new chain wasn't cost effective.
I'm incredibly pleased with them and can't recommend them enough!!
So I just thought I would give some closure to the thread, with happy news

,
Crap quality cast stainless steel - wouldn't trust them to chain up my dog.

The only ones I would use are forged links, either
Acco C links (made in Japan)
Or
Crosby C links
And even then I'll be backing them up with a soft shackle.

When you say great success I am guessing you haven't actually put them to the test yet as in getting to the chains rating?
