Re: Sizing for a Northill anchor

I used to sail the bay back in the late 80"s when I was stationed at Treasure island and then at Alameda NAS . (When I wasn't actually sailing the big boys in the big blue that is)

Re: Sizing for a Northill anchor

That's the reason for having all I he different type and sizes of anchors ( becides the price of the northill is the only one I actually put out any cash for.) Can't resist free safety gear that is serviceable. Lol

Re: Sizing for a Northill anchor

Of the 5 anchors we carry ( 4 are used a lot ) the Northill is my favourite. It penetrates everything that is not solid rock and once the concave U stock starts digging in it is drag free.
Used our so much that the stock rusted at the fixation and broke under heavy load while the wind changed 90 ° direction.

Finding galvanised U profile here in Greece is not possible, having something galvanised is probably a China job.
Found a village blacksmith on one of my bicycle trips trough the country side who did not have the exact U profile but who was inventive. With an angle grinder he cut a square tube lengthwise in two and produced two two feet lengths of fitting U profile. All of that with just a piece of chalk, his angle grinder and his heavy boot to hold the square tube down in the mud behind his workshop.
Ten bucks and 5 minutes of work. Chapeau. Will do for 3 to 4 years.

I fix the stock into the shaft using a hardwood wedge and a simple lashing.

I use the Northill with 5 yards of chain and rope. Used as a second anchor or stern anchor.
