Sizing for a Northill anchor

I have a chance to obtain a 22# northill folding anchor cheap. How big of a sailboat would it be a good secondary for ? There doesn't seem to be any info on the WWW about them

There's a sizing chart in this old book

Re: Sizing for a Northill anchor

Northhills hold very well. The problem with them is when you anchor with winds and tides opposite each other the boat will sail around the anchor (any anchor).

What happens with the northhill is the chain wraps around the anchors lazy fluke (the one not in the sea bed and the chain or rode will then pull the anchor out. Been there done that. Not fun I had 7 wraps, but luckily woke up before going aground... barely.

I still have the anchor but consider the Danforth a better bet.

Re: Sizing for a Northill anchor

Thanks Paul I don't know how I missed that one it looks like this 20# er is good for boats up to ten ton . The listed holding power is 1200 and my current boat only weighs 4800 so I guess this would be an Armageddon anchor for me waiting on the guy to respond now . $50 bucks I can't resist.

I love my Danforth to. Have a 18 pounder for everyday and a 27 for bad weather. This northhill would be a spare in the arsenal.

Re: Sizing for a Northill anchor

I think a 22# or 33# Bruce clone, might do you better as a secondary or even primary, then use the Danforth for a backup.

Northhills do hold well though. Just never use it in areas where tides and winds are opposite and it will do well.

Same thing in areas where the tidal current reverses every six hours (lots of that around here). I HAVE had the rode wrap around the lazy fluke and pull the anchor out. I DID go aground against a rock face. Thank G for steel boats!

Re: Sizing for a Northill anchor

The Northill is a fantastic insurance anchor. It is one of the best in the widest variety of bottoms. Many anchors are great in certain conditions but the Northill is fantastic insurance in most every condition except as in stated above, when you're spinning in circles. The Northill is particularly good in areas of thick crab or ell grass where Bruce and Danforth style anchors don't work well.

The Northill is the anchor I keep ready to toss when the shore behind me keeps getting closer.

Re: Sizing for a Northill anchor

Well I heard from the guy the northill folding anchor is mine. So to recap I have a18 # and a 27# Danforth , a 22# northill and a 15 # box anchors. Now all I need is a small cheap CQR and I will be set for just about anything I might ever encounter on my IB 24 Bahama.

Newhaul, all of your anchors are too small, they are all the wrong kind and you don't have enough chain. Sorry, it had to be said.

I know and to top it all off I really messed up a guy gave me 40 ft of 5/8 BBB chain and I foolishly traded it for 150 ft of 5/16 BBB and I don't have a windless. I'm really FUBAR now.

Good lord 150 feet of chain on a 24 foot boat and your going to be bow down a bit. When I had all chain aboard the Rose (34' islander) the bow dropped 3". Never had a windlass, though I used a rope with chain hook to pull the chain in. I've gone back to mixed rode as my old back and hands just can't deal with that much chain anymore.

Of course your anchors are fine for a 24 foot boat, Though I'm sure Hopcar could sell you a windlass or a 44# Mason . For 8 years I only used one anchor, even though I have three aboard. I will say that the NG anchors really do hold very well. But then again, I never dragged with my bruce clone either. Though did, Twice, with the northhill. Its a great straight line storm anchor though.

Never said I keep it all in the bow . The chain is amidships under companionway steps when not needed. ( just couldn't resist the trade. ). The box anchor resides on the stern and the big Danforth is in the lazerette when I don't need it. Have yet to decide where to store the northill . ( I also have 300 ft of three strand rode) ( new and also free)

All that and I normally anchor in between 2 and 3 fathoms of water at midtide.
