Spare anchor....

So bought my boat last year..... first thing I upgraded was anchor and rode to Rocna 25 (55lbs), now getting a secondary fortress fluke style to add variety. Was going to sell the lewmar delta style 35 lb that came with boat...... or should I keep as spare? Have the room.....
Thanks

Re: Spare anchor....

We have the same configuration. Take the delta as spare, you will never know.

Take it as a spare / stern anchor.

Are the Rocna and Delta used for the same type of bottom? They look fairly close design-wise.

Re: Spare anchor....

I feel a spare anchor is a ......................... spare. As such it should take up the least amount of room. My spare is a Mantus 45# (that's smaller than my primary) and stored in a locker and it never has been wet.

So sell the delta and store the Fortness or whatever

Re: Spare anchor....

The Rocna and Delta are similar type anchors.... never used a delta but a spade is a spade I guess.... I just prefer the modern Rocna. The Fortress will serve for different bottoms.....

Re: Spare anchor....

I wouldn’t want to leave home without at least 3 anchors. So keep the delta and make sure you have enough rode for all three.

Re: Spare anchor....

I liked my Deltas, they do have limitations though. An Aluminum Fortress saved my 47 ft boat from the beach during a 70 mph+ micro burst. I just literally threw it overboard at the last possible minute before we hit bottom. Luckily it dug right in! I was motoring at full throttle and the boat was still nearly on the beach.
Fortunately It was on the bow rail ready for deployment.

Re: Spare anchor....

I would think in terms of what each will be for, and store accordingly. Also think about what the other rodes will be; the main is generally chain, but the others should be rope with only a little chain (secondary rodes don't scrape back and forth on the bottom).

Rocna. Main anchor, used >95% of the time. Store on roller.

Fortress. Used in soft mud. I kept mine in the lazerett, since if the mud was that soft, I was going to use two anchors in a V, and so the anchor would be placed with the dinghy, which was on davits. Same if I am mooring Bahamian or stern. I do NOT want my second anchor rode in a locker, because the tangles if the boat spins are epic.

Delta. Spare. If you cruise long enough and far enough, you will abandon an anchor, at least temporarily; it's under a tree and you've got to go. Also as hammerlock. Does you boat yaw at anchor? Lowering the Delta to scrape a little will stop that. A second bow roller works for this (if it fits, which it probably will not). But as above, don't use this as a second anchor with the rode in the locker.

Re: Spare anchor....

My boat came with dual anchor rollers and 45# CQR's on each one. I sold both the CQR's and got one 55# Vulcan (Rocna w/o the roller to fit on the bow sprit). I then got a Fortress FX-37 for a backup and finally found (on Craigslist), an un-used PE Luke 70. Both the Fortress and Luke break down for better storage.

I left the FX-23 on the stern pulpit. It has it's own rode

RE: Delta and Rocna.
The two designs are different. Not the same design.

Re: Spare anchor....

I’d want a spare anchor. Delta is not my favourite; they’re not in the same class as the new spade-style anchors (ADD: Steadman beat me to it), but if it’s what you have, I’d probably keep it.

I carry a Rocna as my bower (used 90-95% of the time). A large Danforth, a much larger Fortress, and a smaller Bruce as the ‘oh crap!” quick deployment anchor. Three separate rodes.

One needs to compare the areas of the two. The Rocna has substantially larger area.

That's why they ARE different.

Re: Spare anchor....

Yes very different anchors indeed. Never like the delta spade or the cqr for that matter. Just figured better to have the delta as an “oh no” anchor for now....
