Judging by the picture in this West Marine link, I'd say it's possible to make a small enough eye splice onto the first chain link with double braid for it to work on a windlass. Of course, there would be a limitation on chain vs line size for it to work.

A double braid splice around a single link will reduce the strength about 30-50% and create a fatigue point. The radius is too small. That is one of the reasons you use a thimble and the reason it is never done this way.



An unlaid splice does not have this weakness because the effective diameter is that of the unlaid strands.
