Re: splicing anchor line to chain without thimble.

The problem with the chain splice or similar is that it is tight on the chain link and therefore hard to check for wear.

Re: splicing anchor line to chain without thimble.

Here's the clearest video that I've found on how to do a tapered splice to G4 chain. As a caveat, I found that new line splices the best. It's hard to get a neat splice with old line as the strands tend to unravel while you're trying to weave.

How would there be wear between the rope and the chain? The chain will always bend more easily at the next, unconstrained link. Try it! There is zero motion between the rope and the last link for this reason. A non-concern.

There will be increased corrosion, but the rate is well know. Resplice withing 5-8 years.

Re: splicing anchor line to chain without thimble.

Usually you do a back splice with a crown knot through the last link

We used this method, (splicing to “octoplait” rope) on literally hundreds of charter yachts in the Med. I’m sure they still do. Very nice to handle, and easy and fun to do!

I too have done this splice with three strand rope to chain. I can recommend then saturating the last link of chain and the splice with Bee's wax. It will make the splice last longer and keep the usual chain to rope rust from appearing.

Bees wax sounds hard to find, but how about the stuff used to seal the landlubbers toilet to the drain line? Seems about the same consistency and is available everywhere.

That's a sticky wax and will do the opposite of what you want. I've used it to plug holes in sinking boats, at which it excels. Sadly, I've done it more than once....

Re: splicing anchor line to chain without thimble.

just make a dyneema soft shackle to connect and eye-splice on the line to a link or shackle on the chain. I use a length of dyneema to connect our Snubber to the anchor chain. Never had an issue.

Since the chain/rope connection often sits on the bottom, there's a danger of chafing the soft shackle. Of course, if that's chafing, so is the rope...but I think the point here is to make a connection that will fit through a gypsy, and an eye splice is kind of bulky.
