Re: Temporary joining of two anchor chains. Best method?

For years I used a version of these when we had cyclones around. Lost two yachts to different cyclones, but both were torn off moorings my huge structures drifting through. Never from a failure of my tackle.

Anyway, these are NOT the ones I used. These are just an example made for commercial use. This example is for pulling loads (like logging etc) not for lifting. But there are versions for different porpoises. Mine were marine rated gal and from memory, hardened.

They will be a little lower rated that the chain, but once hammered closed, they do the job until next time you need to extend the chain. If you find hardened ones though, don;t expect to just hacksaw them off :-) I always had a 12V angle grinder in my locker.

Rated links = rubbish?
- Touch judgemental?

Built own boat, sailed the world, used these pretty well daily. Encountered lots of coral….I’d trust one of those a long ways before I’d drop a soft shackle into that environment.

Go ahead with that... the body of the unit won't be able to handle the loads, will bulge and tear it apart. A shackle bolts together holding it.

I'm not sure what makes you think that. The G70 twin clevis links are standard lifting equipment with higher WLL than the equivalent G40 chain. It would be almost impossible for two lengths of chain to exert any substantial prying load on the forks, so the cotter pins will see no load. If you think the cotter pins will snag on something and come undone, I can accept that fear, but there are ways to mitigate this risk. To claim that the link will bulge and tear apart seems ridiculous though. What evidence supports this?

Crosby sells twin clevis links.
The 3/8" size has a rated working load of 6600lbs with a 4:1 safety factor, which means G4 chain will most probably give before these links.
You can be absolutely sure that these can carry that load, as these ratings are extensively and carefully tested.
They are NOT going to bulge/tear at lower than that.

Anchors pull pretty hard.

You made a bold claim. I asked what your rational was. You said there's evidence all over the internet. I asked where that evidence is. Then you make a statement that has little meaning without any sort of explanation or context.

Where exactly did you try?

Haven't read all posts so perhaps someone has mentioned it; but have you checked out the Crosby 209A shackle?

Just following.
Cheers for advice on fasteners.

I'd switch chains though assuming same chains of different lengths. Eg shank the 25 metre chain.

If one heavier per length than other I'd shank the heavy chain sir. Helping pull of shank rather than lift of crown.

Re: Temporary joining of two anchor chains. Best method?

I really like the two anchor method described in this article. I haven't yet tried it but am rigged up to do it if required.

Just get a better anchor, chain and windlass don't be afraid to use it

Dual anchors can turn into a tangled shitfight
