Re: Vertical Manual Windlass

Are you turning the motor when you do it manually?? If the motor doesn't self disconnect or otherwise removed from of the system, that would add a substantial resistance to turning the gypsy with a winch handle.

Re: Vertical Manual Windlass

I had a low profile windlass such as you are considering. It was the first windlass I had owned so I didn't know any better. I replaced it with a manual Horizontal windlass and couldn't believe the differance. The longer handle and the back and forth motion vs. the short winch handle and rotating motion makes using the windlass Almost fun. I now find myself using the windlass for other heavy lifting jobs on the boat due to the horizontal rope drum on the windlass. This was not possible with the old vertical rope/chain combination windlass.

I would like to keep it simple and go manual, also like the low profile look of the vertical Windlass.

any imput is appriciated!
Might take a look at this Lemar windlass:

Lewmar V700G Vertical Windlass For 1/4" Chain and 1/2" Rope

I was considering something like this as a windlass for the stern anchor of my 40' boat.

Michael

N.B. Obviously much more attractive when obtained in a previously owned scenario...
