Vertical Windlass Placement

Hello:

I am installing a Quick Antares (vertical axis) Windlass in my CS36 and I am having trouble deciding on the correct placement. Unable to decide on a deck location I thought of placing the windlass in the anchor locker, under the locker cover.

The following link shows a picture demostrating a similar installation on the same type of boat:

The plan is to glass in a shelf and seal off the underside that contains the motor, enabling access via the VBerth. This should keep sea water away from the motor and electrical connections. The chain would fall trough a pipe into the space beneath the anchor locker floor into forward bulkhead. I would not need to modify the anchor locker cover nor I would need to move any cleats. I believe I would have full access to the locker with this solution.

My question is as a follows: the horizontal distance from my bow roller is roughly 48" (122cm) and to place this under the locker it would be roughly 10" (25cm) lower than the roller. This represents a 32 degree incline that the chain would need to traverse from the roller to the windlass. I wonder if the windass will be able to handle that incline? If not, I wonder if I could compensate by placing the windlass at the same angle as the incline.

Any comments or experience with this configuration?

Thank you,

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Did you complete your windlass install? How did it go? What did you learn about the hight and placement? I have a similar boat and am contemplating exactly what you are proposing in this thread. Any advice or lessons learned would be helpful.

Thanks and Regards,

Dave
