Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

After my lead line tells me it’s an apple and grapefruit bottom, I drag out my trusty three piece Paul Luke style anchor and after letting out more chain than usual, I screw that baby in full reverse. I’ve dove on them and had to dig em out after a storm because only the cross arm was visible. I keep a army trenching shovel for getting my Fortress anchors out post storms as well.
I really didn’t understand why you passed on Luke / Herreshoff style anchors which seem to work too well in cobble and boulders. Too well because lots could never be retrieved.
I appreciate your videos. I’m just not impressed by the new generation anchors except for Fortress. We carry a wide range anchor inventory. Bought a 120 Rocna early on but not impressed that it’s magical. The roll bar rusted on top so I was thinking of reducing the diameter. Now I should drill holes in it? My wife will be drilling holes in my head and my scuba and send me down to check the anchor while she drops all the chain. Well...Happy trails to you

You often want a line to the crown of the Luke to get it out. Wedged in boulders is a real pain.

As you know.

Thanks for your comments Manateeman,

I have nothing against Luke/Herreshoff/Fisherman anchors. The only reason I have not been testing one (anymore) is because I do not have one.

Heck, if I was bequeathed one that disassembled I would happily store it away in the bilge.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Fishing off No Mans Land, my grandfather would tie the line to the crown not the ring and then tie off the ring to the line with cod line. Exactly as posted above.
Never lost an anchor.
The palms varied in sharpness. Herreshoff anchors were more delicate looking than the Luke casting. I have a three piece where the ball is drilled, tapped and screws on. Mr Luke’s grandfather told me it was very old, 50 years ago. LOL.
Never ever wrapped the rode around the arm sticking up like you see in books.
If you take one of the old three piece anchors to a foundry they can cast it in silicon bronze, you can sand and polish it until you out bling Mr T.
I’d wager they will out perform modern designs in this or more boulder strewn bottoms. I think the British Navy used a one arm fisherman design with a unique wood crossbar and I just forget the name. Anyone recall this?
Happy trails to you

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Greetings fellow mariners,

Steve beat me to the post, but yes I have given Steve carte blanche permission to do whatever, whenever, however, wherever, with whomever he deems appropriate to put the Rocna to the test. It is a long story but I had a Mantus, which I loved, on my old boat but didn’t fit well on my new boat due to the roll bar. Bought the Rocna due to it’s smaller roll bar and it fit better but still not exactly what I wanted. As you can see in the picture modifying my anchor roller is not really a viable option without both major and significant “boat surgery”. I recently bought a 46 pound Ultra which fits perfectly. Needless to say I am watching the ultra vs Rocna tests Steve is performing with a keen eye. I figured offering the Rocna up for testing would not only help other forum readers but would also assist in my final anchor decision. As of now I think the Ultra will be the choice. But I am open to having my mind changed if Steve shows me a better mouse trap. I am also looking forward to a Mantus M2 test as both it and the Rocna Vulcan will also fit my bow roller quite nicely. Thanks for all your hard work Steve!!

Safe Journeys and safer anchoring all,
~Jake

Jake, I have to admit, the Ultra definitely has that bling effect and I believe is a good anchor, but I reckon an Excell would have done you proud.
On behalf of the membership, thanks for the sacrificial Rocna for testing, extremely generous of you in the pursuit of enhanced anchoring knowledge.

Uncle Bob,

Yes you bring up a good point. An Excel has crossed my mind a time or two. I need to do some more research but I haven’t ruled anything out yet. I have never seen an excel in the flesh. Maybe when I meet up with Steve in the future I will take a closer look at his and run some dimensions on my boat to make sure it will ride in the roller. Thanks for the tip!

Yep, nothing says "I believe in my product" better than submitting for testing.

Others that have done so are:

Spade (a loaner that was later offered to me at half price - which I paid).

Anchor Right (Excel, Super Sarca)

Mantus

Ultra

Viking

All other anchors were bought, borrowed, or scrounged by me.

Thank you so much for the Patreon hit!

Steve
Steve, in the rocks bottom test it is obvious that since the anchor is not really penetrating the seabed the bigger the scoop is the better it will hold so maybe if you intend of doing it again it is better to compare by sizes not even weight.

If you wish or intend to test another, a bigger size of our anchors just let me know and we will send you one, BTW all of our anchors, including the Viking 7 you already got have holes in their flukes to avoid among other things mud from piling up, all except for our Viking 5, the smallest one.

Keep on testing, anchors are a serious issue and your videos are a great contribution.

Seems a Spade might do the trick for you, too, though I’m pretty sure we are splitting hairs once you’ve got a next-gen anchor that fits.

Safe Journeys,

Ask for a template of the size Excel you want and they will send you one. I asked Rex (Anchor Right Australia) for one and he sent a folded cardboard template by mail. I traced it onto some rigid board and tried it out.

Our anchor roller was designed for a Spade and the several sizes larger Excel template fits almost exactly the same (S140 and #9). The lower roller is against the notch of the Excel rather than the fluke as with the Spade and the upper roller pushes the Excel’s straighter shank up more than the Spade’s curved shank. There is more Excel fluke forward of shank than the Spade, so it will stick out forward of the anchor roller more.

Izi,

At the end of this week, Panope will go into the shed for the winter.

That said, I hope to conduct a hard sand "beach test" with a truck this fall.

A 45lb. Viking anchor would be a welcome addition to my test inventory.
