Re: Viking anchor , now where have I seen this before.....

Just bumped into this "Viking anchor, now where have I seen this before.....
" thread that ended with my reply from August 2019 to so much sarcasm.

Almost a whole year passed, many things happened in our world and, we are still here alive and kicking and very proud of what we are making showing again and again that using HT steel and having a good design will save weight and increase performance, you are welcomed to visit us and see for yourselves.

Cheers.

Have there been any results from those who requested trial anchors? Very interested to see their impressions posted on here.

Re: Viking anchor , now where have I seen this before.....

well, I have Viking 20 third-generation (i believe the one they are selling today is the 4th and the last generation for now with the fluke shank connecting crown at the back of the anchor creating, even more, holding, not that there is a need for that with my boat size), for about 8 months now, replaced the delta anchor that i got with my hunter 45DS boat when I bought here, sailed and anchored with it many times all over NY, NJ . Maine and Minneapolis area in various seabeds, it never failed me. Doing his job every time and it is very easy to handle.

Wow, perhaps I am under the influence, but which anchor are you talking about?
A Delta on your previous boat, then a Viking, then another Delta?
Confused..

We all know that this forum is a Mantus fortress but still, even Mantus cheerleaders can show some courtesy and respect, please behave.

ROTFLMAO, The Mantus is a derivation of the Rocna, which in turn is a derivation of the Bugel and Super Sarca. And the Wasi Bugel probably predates them all.

You do realize the discussion progressed a long way from my initial comments. I do hope you plan to offer your insights all the way along.

Re: Viking anchor , now where have I seen this before.....

Let’s get this straight once and for all.
There are many ways to define anchor design but one ‘classification' might be ballasted anchors and unballasted anchors - simple stuff.

Unballasted anchors would include Danforth, Fortress, Brittany (all hinged), and Bugel, Bruce, and SARCA. There are others if you want to extend the list.

Ballasted anchors include CQR, Delta, Spade and Rocna, Supreme, Excel, and Ultra.

Each group has many variants and many copies

There are other ways to define anchors but this is just one way.

The characteristic of the unballasted anchors is that the crown, the junction between shank and fluke is at the heel. Conversely ballasted anchors all have the crown forward, maybe 30%-40% forward from the heel, some crowns are even quite close to the toe.

Mantus is an unballasted fluke anchor with its crown in the location of a ballasted anchor.

Most anchors, ballasted or unballasted, when setting in sand have a fluke/seabed angle of ‘about' 30 degrees. In softer seabeds, a larger angle is more beneficial and this is why Fortress and Supermax have a variable fluke angle, to allow fluke seabed angles higher than 30 degrees. Lower angles, lower than 30 degrees, are only used when seabeds are very hard. People simply do not report that their anchor, Rocna, Spade, Excel, etc have been defeated by a hard seabed - so hard seabeds do not seem common. Much work has been conducted on optimum fluke/seabed angles

This historic work is discussed in this article:

https://www.practical-sailor.com/sai...-anchor-angles

If you check images of anchors set underwater you will find most fall into the 30-degree fluke/seabed bracket. Exceptionally Mantus has a fluke/seabed angle of 16 degrees.

Viking has been designed on sound principles - all of which have been freely available for decades.
So Don’t knock Viking as a copy of Mantus or any other anchor we are way beyond that.

No Problem, what questions would you like answered.
The reality is that anyone who thinks there is a sustainable legal position regarding Viking copying mantus is wrong both at law and in practice.
