Well that was a workout

Upon arrival, anchored up with the vulcan and bridal. Wind around 15 to 19 kts with a two knot reversing tidal current. Found a large concrete abandoned slab nearby, so we planned a transfer.
Only 10 ft deep, so i jump into the water with the end of a 40’ length of 3/8” chain. 5/8” nylon on the end of that. I drag it over to the slab, lots of up and down. I thread chain around arousing a very small shark and 1 lobster in the process. 1’ deep shoal 50’ aft and downwind. Made the bridal transfer with careful boat maneuvers. Now, the 600# estimated load on a 5/8” line without benefit of a second bow roller [emoji30]. Meanwhile i struggle with the 50# vulcan with me walking it back to the boat on the seafloor. The last 20’ is winched up and available for the 2am emergency which may be tomorrows report.
Glad the water is warm. Click image for larger version

Why did you decide to transfer? Didn’t trust your Vulcan?

I reckon the water just seemed inviting and you had nothing else to do

I thought he was going for lunch! The lobster and shark steaks sounded fantastic!

About 2” of sand here and very little room for an accident. Anchor bites into the occasional hole in hardpack.

Re: Well that was a workout

So you anchored first, then hand carried a bunch of chain and heavy line to connect to a concrete slab, then hoisted the anchor and its rode and put the bridle on the concrete slab rode? The primary anchor wasn’t used at all once you were done, right?

Then why anchor in the first place, unless you were single handing? Simply hold the boat in place with engine(s), use the dinghy to transport the chain and pay out the nylon behind, connect chain to slab and nylon to bridle. Done, no phaffing about with the primary anchor and it’s rode. That’s the way we do it if we know we’re not using our primary anchor (though our shorelines are Dyneema, so no dragging lots of heavy chain around).

Good question. Decision was really driven by the 15 to 20 kt winds and the 2 knot current we found on arrival. NE wind and W current. Good water viz, and our gps mark did put us very close. But when the current shifted, we were 100’ away.
Vulcan is great, but not much more than the very tip was buried for that first nite.

More underwater work to do. We have the dreaded chain wrap. I see our big round fender in use next. Water is 8 ft deep currently.

Part 2:

I went down and fixed the chain wrapped around the concrete. We reduced scope to about 1.5 to 1. I attached a buoy to the chain 4’ from the concrete attach point to keep the chain nearby from any more wrapping. I shortened the bridal to minimums, keeping the chain from scraping either keel no matter the wind or current.

So all this is just a poor man’s temporary mooring, i suppose. But its not reuseable.
