What grade anchor chain do I have?

My chain is somewhat worse for wear after 4 years cruising so have decided to relpace it.

Just cleaned up a section to try and work out what grade chain I have and the only marking I can find is CP. After a while researching of the interweb I can find no reference to this type of chain marking. Can anyone help identify it?

You’re sure it’s not PC?

It’s looking like a Campbell chain.

The catalog is hard to read but I’ve seen markings that look similar in it.

Call and see if they recognize the stamping

This site gives dimensions for different grades of chain;
https://www.mantusmarine.com/mantus-...e/rode-sizing/
Measuring the size of the links in your current chain may guide you to its grade. Do you have a manual for your windlass, or can you find one online? It will tell you what fits your gypsy ... more important imo than determining what you currently have.

Thanks ill measure it and see what i can find. I have a lighthouse windlass, the manual says it comes with a gypsy as standard for 3/8 bbb, it has 2 gypsys one is defo 3bbb as i have a 3b chain on one side but the primary chain that i want to replace is definitely not 3b.

Re: What grade anchor chain do I have?

Having read some more about chains and gypsys i think tge safest option is to just take the gypsy with me to a chain supplier when i get to australia.

It must be a US thing, as the size of chain links has nothing to do with the grade of the chain formed from those links. Grade is about the rated strength of the chain and is independent of link size. Size of a link is determined by the standard, the two most common being DIN766 and ISO4565. DIN links have slightly shorter pitch (length) than ISO links (in 10mm size DIN link is 28mm and ISO link is 30mm).

That’s why you need to match gypsy and chain for two parameters:
1) diameter of chain, eg 10mm
2) standard of chain, eg DIN766 or ISO4565

The decision of what grade to choose is not related to either size nor standard.

Not strictly necessary, if you can identify your gypsy standard and size; that is, whether it fits DIN766 or ISO4565 standard, and what diameter chain.

Here’s the original gypsy for our boat. It is DIN766 standard and fits 1/2” diameter chain. That’s all you need to know when buying new chain.
