What is this called and how do I adjust it?

I understand this takes the load of snapping motion... but I don't know what it's called. Also it's too high up for my use. I need to move the line through it but after 20 minutes to no avail I gave up. How do you move the line through it without destroying the line?

Is wetting it with fresh water my best bet?

Thanks

This is the midships mooring lines. It's a six point connection in a Swedish marina. The stern and bow lines act as springs. But it would be nice to tighten of the lateral movement. Because they're useless right now.

It's called a snubber and you can move it by painfully scooting the line through the eye and advancing it around the coils and through the next eye.
You can lube it with soap if the line's too tight.

It is the wrong kind of rope for the application, imo. I would go to 3 strand nylon, or nylon double braid, and then use both the nylon which is stretchier, and the snubber. it looks like that is the shore side of the boat, and the boarding side is the starboard side. There must be a fair wee bit of surge coming in there to have done so much damage to your blue line, so the boat needs the snubber help. Use soapy water for a lubricant when you set it up again with stretchier line. Use the same diameter nylon as the current line, the 3 strand is stretchier than the double braid in the nylon. Good luck with it: it is obvious the boat needs it.

Another option might be a "flopper stopper".

Yup the soap made it possible, great idea. Cheers

Re: What is this called and how do I adjust it?

Great thank you, I will refer to your thread with I replace my mooring lines. Thank you for such a great explanation. It's in Sweden, and ive got the bow facing the dock, then two small floating pier "arms" on each side of the boat.

Docking seems so simple vs Sweden and Denmark where you usually just have two pilings and a dock. So 4 points around the boat make for good security. Theres no swell between Denmark and Sweden (occasionally during big storms maybe a couple meters I've heard). But almost no tide here because it's where the Baltic (fresh water) meets the north sea (SW of course).
