I usually try not to respond on anchor posts, discussion on the capabilities of various production boats and bringing firearms when cruising. These always go sideways. Sorry for contributions to this.

Funny you should mention that. I've been working on an anchor design that incorporates a 20 mm cannon so I can easily clear those crappy fiberglass boats out of my way.

That's funny, I've been working on a multi purpose cannon that shoots anchors! Put your hook right where you want it, even on shore, OR sink pesky pirates!

Hmmm, shoot the anchor....

I like it! Catamarans make lovely large targets, by the way.

Re: What is your Bigness Factor?

I find the poll and all the responses quite interesting. My boat is 24 feet/8000lbs and the bow anchor is a 22lb Delta. Stern anchor is a 10lb Fortress. Both of these look rather huge (especially the Fortress) on my boat and I have seen many 30-35 foot sailboats using similar size gear. I have also seen many boats (larger than mine) using a steel danforth at the bow, apparently as a primary anchor. According to various books and sales specs the Delta almost rates as a storm anchor for my size boat. I haven't seen in any of the responses anyone point out that it is surface area that determines holding power although weight may play an important part in getting the anchor to set in a poor bottom like grass. The Delta has only given trouble in soft mud and in those conditions the Fortress works very well. Once set the Delta has never dragged but in mud it fails to set (drags when you test it).
Final comment- I thought I had a large anchor but it barely makes it into the normal range. Perhaps it has surface area equal to a CQR that is 30% heavier.

What's the best projectile anchor do ya think? Bruce?

A 40 lb Bruce would make a big hole in a boat, just gotta lob it 100 yds or so. Anchor mortar?

No, I think the next generation anchors would be far superior. There is so much engineering that has gone into designing anchors that when airborne really tear a big hole in whatever they land in that you wouldn't want to miss out on those advancements.

And the mortar idea makes a lot of sense. I can see a Rocna with its round hoop fitting nicely into this model.

Might have trouble getting that on the foredeck! Perhaps a fiberglass model?

Lol! That was my next contender. I think it needs to be a cheepy with no moving parts, for more ammo and better ballistics...

Actually, the original Norwegian windlass on Delfin was about that size, so I could find room. It would serve multiple purposes. Launching the anchor (still some dispute on the best design, but we can discuss that in another 5 or 6 thousand posts), garbage disposal and of course announcing our arrival in port.

Maybe something more catapult-y? Mast becomes a trebuchet?

Garbage disposal, LOL!

Now, you might have veered into a solution to this whole controversy, Kettlewell. Let everyone use the same dinky, bracelet ornament anchor regardless of boat size, but then deploy a 6 ton kellet when you feel the wind might pick up.

And who said good ideas don't come out of Internet forums?>

Re: What is your Bigness Factor?

Reloads might be a problem, should probably be a repeater-just in case. Could be done on a big power boat like yours...
