What is your Bigness Factor?

Anchor size poll above. Take your main anchor weight in pounds (1 kg=2.2 lbs) and divide by your LOA in feet (1 meter=3.28 feet). The result is your Bigness Factor.

For example, my Finnsailor 38 carries a 45 lb. main anchor, so 45/38=1.18, or on the high side of what I have labeled "Normal."

Let the quibbling begin about the factor ranges!

Re: What is your Bigness Factor?

Sorry to the metric folks, but you have to convert to US measure then divide:

Quote:
45 kg,19m boat=2.3!
Should be 45 kg x 2.2 = 99 lbs. 19 m x 3.28 = 62.3 ft. 99/62.3 = 1.6 Bigness Factor

Re: What is your Bigness Factor?

I don't know what criteria you are using to define the categories, but our anchor was chosen from the manufacturer recommendation chart and it comes out as 1.4, which is almost BIB.

That seems an odd category for a standard recommendation.

Probably should, but I wanted to keep it really simple so we get lots of responses. The number is not to be taken as a scientific category, but just a relative level.

Re: What is your Bigness Factor?

Since the displacement of a boat, and the windage of a boat, are not linear functions of length, I think this metric is flawed. Larger boats with average sized anchors will have much greater "Bigness Factors" than smaller boats with average sized anchors.

I would think that if you want a simple metric, it would be much better to divide anchor weight by boat displacement.

Virtually every anchor manufacturer has a table relating boat length to anchor size. Some do include displacement, but most have something vague about upsizing one if your boat is heavy.

Re: What is your Bigness Factor?

I also believe the metric is flawed. In addition to what was mentioned above, the use of LOA instead of LOD seems problematic (what effect does a bowsprit have on anchor size?). The poll would be more useful if it asked how many sizes up or down on your anchors sizing chart.

I am 1.29. according to this poll.

I am 2 sizes larger on my anchors sizing chart. Should that not constitute BiB?

Re: What is your Bigness Factor?

Interesting metric. Sounds like people get a little offended when you imply their thing is small. My thing is 1.75
