What's this I found in my anchor locker ?

I should have taken a picture but I didn't.

It's well made from solid Stainless, maybe a one off ? A 1" round shaft about 450mm long, one end with an elongated eye for attaching. Half way down the 1" shaft is a 16mm x 300mm rod drilled and welded through the 1" shaft at 90° to the axis of the main shaft, closer to the tip of the 1" shaft is an identicle 16mmm rod but rotated 90° further around the main shaft.

I assume it to be an anchor for rocks or coral ? Maybe the 16mm rods are such that they will bend rather than jamb and still be retrievable?

Dave,

I don't know, but it sounds like something custom made. Maybe ask the PO? It might be a killick, but they usually don't have prongs on them, and are made of something heavier than s/s. 'Tis a puzzlement!

Thanks Ann, I'll get a picture, I might not be describing it well.

Just what I imagined from your description, Dave.

Not like any reef anchor I've seen.

I have seen one stainless steel reef anchor - most are made with galvanised mild steel tines that bend without too much risk of fatigue.

The only ss reef anchor I've seen was made in the US by a small corporation that mainly made accessories for guns and the like. See: https://www.dnzproducts.com/product/...aper-anchor-2/

Definitely not an anchor. My best guess would be a docking aide, to attach a line without leaving the boat. Might work with piers which just have a wooden beam bolted on top.

I guess we can be pretty sure it's inserted into something and then turned 45 degrees. The bend lower part suggests that as well.

Gotta be a dinghy anchor, folks usually place ground tackle in anchor lockers. I have a few things in mine that I think would move a new owner to scratch his or her head too

There might be something to this, the welds have been ground back as though to allow it to insert and/or turn. Only other reason to do that is if the welds were bad but I don't think that's the reason.

I can but recommend: Peninsula Metal Recycling. Cash for Scrap

Of course, you could consider reworking it as an Xmas tree for December 2019 and years to come.

Re: What's this I found in my anchor locker ?

Dave, try it as a sand anchor for the dinghy. If it works, okay. If not, perhaps offer it for sale as a mystery object? It also just might be a stern anchor for the dinghy, for those situations where you want to hold the dinghy off the dock, to avoid having it swept under something. (We have a little sand anchor for this purpose.)

Don't you really think it's too nice to toss?

Ann
