Who are you buying chain from these days?

Looking to see where people are getting their chain from, and their opinions on quality. I'm looking for 200' of 5/16" G43/40 Windlass Chain, hot dipped galvanized. It seems like you can spend anywhere from $3/foot to $8/foot and up, and I'm trying to weigh quality/longevity against my budget. I definitely don't want a chain that will be rusting in 2 years.

We're offloading 200' of 3/8" BBB chain because it doesn't fit in our windlass.

Last year, after calling around, I ended up buying 275' of USA-made Acco chain from Defender. Even with the significant freight charges, it was the best overall deal.

A buddy just received 400ft of 5/16” G4 ACCO chain from West Marine.

So? Well, his boat is moored on a small island in SE Alaska where we pay for barge service out of Seattle for such purchases. He took advantage of a West Marine US$25 shipping special, and yes, they sent it all the way here for $25… so watch for deals everywhere…

If you live near to or next to the ocean that services ships, there is bound to be a ship's chandlery in the area. This is where I go to get chain, as they offer virtually every type of chain ever made at 1/10 the price West does.

Aloha I live in Honolulu and purchased 400 (a barrell) feet of 3/8 G43 chain from West Marine. I used my rigger to purchase it through to get the port supply discount and bouth the barrell to get a further discount. I will use the additional 100 feet for a stern anchor. Also WM had it in stock so no extra shipping charge. As you have found out you need the correct chain for your windlass. I prefer US made chain.

Maggi chain is worth a look. Bought some in FL a number of years ago from a local chandlery. Made in Italia if memory serves and has stood up well over the years.

Check with any general hardware store and see if they can order it to come in with their usual deliveries. Here in the USA I've seen genuine ACCO and other brands of marine chain at the hardware store. They might not stock it, but it might be available in their catalog.

Bought my 3/8bbb acco from defender. It was worth the drive up (live on LI) versus paying the freight. Best price we found. But the freight will kill you…..

I'd love to split an order Joe, but I can't see this making sense regarding delivery costs. There's a local chandler/hardware store that I can use, but it's going to be pricey for me.

An easier search to find such firms is 'life raft service centres'.

And Defender now (finally!) is operating a Canadian store. Priced in CAD. Shipped from within Canada, so no border issues.

I bought Titan chain from Fisheries supply in Seattle. I've always used Acco before but noticed a lot of people complaining about corrosion within a couple of years. This was brand new chain.

Reviews on Titan chain looked much better so...
