At the risk of also being pedantic, the chain wheel on a windlass is called gypsy in the UK and a wildcat in the US. Both are the same thing. The other side of the windlass usually has a rope drum or warping drum.

The pedantor who pointed out the difference to me is from the West Country, so I wonder. Maybe the term is only used by us beyond the Pale. Rope drum or warping drum seems fine for the gypsy, but I'll go with wildcat for the chain-thingie.
