Windlass works UP but not DOWN

I have a Simpson Lawrence Sprint 1500 windlass. We replaced the motor 2 years ago and we put in a new solenoid in today, we redid all the connections and checked the foot switches. Down it works like a charm, up the motor struggles a lot and does not go like it is stuck. It is down to the motor or the gear box...

What now, do we take the gear box apart and start looking at the gear box. Wow, we did this 2 years ago and it was quite a project. Any suggestions before I turn into a grease monkey?

Thanks

How about Brushs- going down is easy- where you need power is up

Maybe a bad electrical connection external to the motor? Check the voltage at the motor when under load (up)

Check the voltage at the motor when the windlass is working.

With mine it turned out to be a bad fuse (connection). Foot switches are known to go bad too.

Re: Windlass works UP but not DOWN

My SL 1500 windless didn't have a gearbox! It had two solenoids, one wired for up and one for down. Somehow the up soleniod is not transfering enough current to the motor..
It could also be the footswitch. I always dismantled the footswitch and cleaned it with steelwool before raiseing the anchor. It was on the departure list of things to do. I always hated to need to re-anchor and have the footswitch fail.

Probably a onnection or a power problem. Like suggested check voltage under load.

Re: Windlass works UP but not DOWN

The sprint 1500 does have a gearbox and your problem sounds like the classic fault with the Sprint range. They have a double start thread arrangement in the brake module. This sometimes gets stuck and will cause the winch to run one direction fine but not the other. You will have to strip the gearbox and check the brake (Simpson Lawrence called the brake the 2nd Compound gear) The small gear in the brake is the one with the two start thread. It will probably be stuck in one direction. Figure out which way its stuck and tap one of the gear teeth with a brass rod in the direction to unlock the brake. Don't bash it it should only need a light tap.

Re: Windlass works UP but not DOWN

Your right about the searbox. Mine was a Lighthouse 1500 and had no gearbox.

I've been off the boat for over 3 years. Sorry for the misinformation
