Re: AIS Spoofed in Black Sea

I watched an episode from Adventures of an Old Sea Dog on YouTube in the last year, when he was sailing across the Pacific, he had a Chinese fishing trawler close by off to port that on AIS showed it was miles away. The system is useful for the honest and useless when hijacked by those with dubious motives.

Who had the motive to spoof the warships being off Sebastopol? I can think of many on both sides of the Crimean dispute. What a strange world we live in.

GPS spoofing is real. Read this article about Iran capturing a US drone by using GPS spoofing:
https://www.securityweek.com/reports...h-gps-spoofing

Along the same lines, you can run into this on our highways. I don't want to blame truckers, but sometimes they don't want their exact whereabouts known, so they buy GPS jammers and roll down the highway with their location reporting systems jammed. Lots of airports are close to highways and this has been known to also turn off the ILS landing systems that airplanes use.

Technology is great until you become dependent on it.

Fortunately there is a GPS lab at the Illinois Institute of Technology working on these problems.

Re: AIS Spoofed in Black Sea

...then today the New York Times reports that HMS Defender sailed along the coast of Crimea on Wednesday, eliciting warning shots from a Russian vessel and buzzing by Russian warplanes. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-57583363
No spoofing now.
