Amsterdam Tests Electric Autonomous Boats on Its Canals

Amsterdam Tests Electric Autonomous Boats on Its Canals

https://www.msn.com/en-us/travel/new...?ocid=msedgntp

Amsterdam's more than 100 kilometers (60 miles) of waterways are to start hosting prototypes of futuristic boats—small, fully autonomous electric vessels—to carry out tasks including transporting passengers and picking up garbage.

. . .

The Roboats have orange propellers and four thrusters that are powered by an electric battery. They can go about 4 mph (6 kph) and can run for 12–24 hours, depending on the battery type and cargo load.

They are steered remotely by a computer, which processes data from cameras and sensors that scan the areas around the vessel, detecting stationary and moving objects. The vessels are modular so they can be easily adapted for different purposes, carrying cargo or workers. Developers say they still need two to four years to perfect the self-steering technology.

I'm sure the colour of the propellors is a vital factor in the development of their navigation and collision avoidance protocols.

Indeed the Dutch do like their orange.

Another remote controlled, albeit not autonomous controlled ship announcement.

The U.K.'s Royal Navy remotely operated the MADFOX (MAritime Demonstrator For Operational eXperimentation)—an autonomous vessel—for the first time this week, marking a "significant milestone" for the high-tech ship, which was unveiled in March.

the latest test saw it controlled via "a laptop, tablet and two sailors in a tent overlooking the water" at Browndown Beach in Gosport, a coastal town in the county of Hampshire in the southeast of England,

Going by a US Army recruitment ad I recently saw, I'd say "unmanned" (take that to mean what you like) is the future for many western militaries.
