Antique Cary sextant

I recently picked up a beautiful antique brass sextant, in pretty good condition. It is engraved "Cary, London" on the arc, and has capital "B" on the box and on the handle. No other identifying marks or serial numbers found anywhere. Inside the box lid, there is a space that looks like it may have had some label at some time. In that space is some handwriting, possibly in pencil. It has two words, not legible, and what appears to be "1891" or "1896".
I do know that William Cary made instruments until his death in 1825, when the firm was taken over by Charles Gould.
I have not been able to track down any other information about it. Can you tell me anything about it?

Re: Antique Cary sextant

Do you think it's brass? Seems odd for a sea-bound instrument. Cary also made surveying sextants.

Re: Antique Cary sextant

There are a lot of references to Cary Sextants on the Internet. I was listing them and then got a lightning flash and lost the lot.

Did you look at these?
