Australia to South Africa

I'll be heading across the Indian Ocean from Australia to South Africa at the end of December.
Because of the late exit, which route would be a preferred one.

ouch . . . I presume you know that's during the cyclone season (nov - april).

The 'normal' route to South Africa is Christmas island, Cocos keeling, Rodrigues, mauritius, reunion, madagascar, durban (or port richard). But the Rodrigues to Madagascar is right thru the main cyclone belt. Normally you aim to arrive Durban about Nov 1st to avoid the cyclones.

An alternative would be to stay north as long as possible . . . maldives, seychelles, mozambique channel. This would loop you not totally above but at least around the edge of the highest frequency cyclone areas . . . BUT it takes you thru the active pirate zone. I would not recommend it because of that.
