Best Charting Software

Guys,

I have been dedicated user of The Cap'n for years. No problems till a bit ago and now the program won't stay loaded i.e. it repeatedly asks me to register before I can open it. Support at Cap'n gives me a new registration number and that works once but as soon as it is shut down we're back to square one. Cap'n support while very kind has not been able to fix the glitch.
So being PC and laptop based (as a backup, I have Garmon chart plotter at the upper helm) I'm wondering what the consensus is for a new charting software. I'm leaning toward Coastal Explorer but open to folks who have had good or bad luck with whatever.
Unrelated I have had a bad experience in the Bahamas with Navionics so I'm not going there.

Thanks for the direction and opinions

OpenCPN is very full featured and very popular.

I have had good experience with SOB over the last 14 tears. Had a similar problem with a recent upgrade which was constantly asking for the registration when I restarted. SOB support replied within 24 hours and fixed the problem.

I used to use Coastal Explorer, but I find their "new" interface difficult to use. I'm now using OpenCPN. OpenCPN's chart management is brilliant -- variety of formats, chart groups. I haven't Coastal Explorer for about a year now. Give OpenCPN a try - it doesn't cost anything.
