Big Sarasota Pass conditions

4/2/18. Does anyone know firsthand if the pass is passable currently with a draft of 4.5 feet?

In Sarasota Bay currently and would like to go outside to sail up the coast but don't know if it is possible. I have heard issues with shoaling and can't find real time reports.

Thanks

Haven't gone out through Big pass recently, however, you will need to head south to head north. You would be probably better off just heading up the GICW out through Anna Maria bridge to Tampa Bay.

Don't even think about it. If you want to get into the Gulf, head north and cut through Longboat Pass. Check the latest LNTM for the west coast of Florida.

Just make that trip south. Was hoping to go back outside the GICW. Look so like we might be heading back on the GICW also. Thanks for then input.

Re: Big Sarasota Pass conditions

USCG has announced that all channel markers are being removed from Big Pass and New Pass, as both inlets are shoaling. They recommend Venice Jetties or Longboat Pass.

Longboat Pass is no picnic. If you want to go north, continue north in the ICW into lower Tampa Bay and head outside through the shipping channel north of Egmont.

Re: Big Sarasota Pass conditions

Longboat Pass has been dredged and is now straight in, from the outer markers to the bridge. Piece of cake. Was there two weeks ago.

However, if you are heading south after heading through the bridge, stay VERY close to the bridge to stay in deep water, and wait as long as possible to follow the shoreline off to the southeast. Be aware of current, which can be relatively strong, and is disconcerting that close to the bridge.

If you are going north fronm the pass, the channel is well marked.
