Cruising the DR in April 2021

I've done the Google search but there's no current info and I'm all over Active Captain and Noonsite.

The Admiral and I are leaving Stuart, Fl in March 2021 on a 36' Cape Dory with a 5' draft and working our way to the USVI.

From Luperon, DR we're looking for safe calm anchorages down the northern coast to Puerto Santa Barbara and then over to and down the southern coast of Puerto Rico to the USVI.
Our average speed is 5kts so we're hoping to stay under 50nm a day and make this an enjoyable passage rather than beating into unforgiving seas for several days. Done that a few times and prefer not to do it again.

The details on INavX are rather broad and the coast of the DR seems a little rugged with numerous coral heads and reefs that aren't always plotted correctly according the Active Captain Community.
Anyone have any current info to share?

Only good anchorage is Semana Bay. There are a few spots to stop, but now good protection in most stops.

Re: Cruising the DR in April 2021

The general strategy is to get to Samana as quick as you can and wait for a window to cross the Mona.

Many will leave Luperon early evening and motor like hell up the coast, relatively close in, taking advantage of the night Lee. Others are happy to tack out and sail it.

The prevailing wind is out of the ESE and the trades run 15-20. Between that and an opposing current approaching 1 knot getting down the coast can be sporty and tiring. However when the wind shifts northerly the coves along the north coast get the northern swell and are not tenable.

Bruce Van Sant's Thornless Path book is a good resource for this area as well.

+1

I would consider it an absolute must if you're sailing the Thorny Path
