One thing I did was write down the barometer reading once an hour, if it was dropping I would reef. I'm glad I did because there was gale over Biscay that wasn't in the forecast 35 knots gusting 50 knots. In the English Channel there was secondary low that wasn't in the forecast 50 knots gusting 80 knots.The spray was so much we couldn't see the top of the mast or the bow.

I'm a coastal sailor in the Chesapeake. I keep two logs. One is maintenance: engine oil changes, coolant changes, when things are installed, etc. The other is a combination of navigation data from days sailing and narrative about what we did, ate, conditions etc.
