Maitai..

Unless you have created a new way to draw the required grib area,I can no longer hold left mouse click to create the required grib area in the latest version?

When will we be able to use .kap charts?

Tore

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Hello Tore,

To select an area you have now either to click on the selection button (the small square on the tool bar) or to hold <shift> when clicking on the map.

We can load kaps containing polynomials (for instance noaa kaps). The kaps without polynomials are for a later version

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Quite weird indeed...

Do you have also "do not route ouside screen" and "auto-zoom" checked?

Can you reproduce it each time and if yes can you give me the coordinates of the start/end point, and the polar you are using so I can try to reproduce it myself?

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

I have used the following settings;

"Do not run outside screen" is not checked, but auto zoom was checked. When i check "do not run outside screen" and un-check "auto-zoom" it runs ok.

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Normally you should leave these 2 options checked, unless you really want something special. You can tune the zoom level in the advanced options.

qtVlm does not "see" coasts outside screen. So if you let him route outside the current view, there is quite a big chance that the routing will cross some land.

With autozoom option checked qtVlm will calculate a reasonable view that normally will be enough to detect the coasts around the orthodromic route.

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

With the current route i am trying to make, the autozoom will zoom in so that the most southern part of the country gets out of the screen.

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Did you try to adjust the autozoom level in the advanced options?

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Maitai, When I go to GribFile > Map Type > Check CAPE the program crashes.
I have tried to reopen, and it crashes then.
I have tried to reopen and it crashes again and sends message to Microsoft.
I have then selected another boat and it opens.
I have tried selecting GribFile > Map Type > Check CAPE and it crashes.
I have tried to reopen, waiting, waiting, on selecting boat. Then OK. It opens with CAPE.
I can Gribfile > map type > uncheck CAPE.
Here is a dropbox link for the grib
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/42870400/20130222_133507_.grb
What files do you want? I was checking all the different types of grib. Noaa does not seem to have current gribs. Where can I find one? Thanks.

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

@Lars it can happen from time to time, in some really tricky cases (and your example is really a challenge ). That's why the option "autozoom" is there. In 99% of the case it's enough, but in your case you need to deactivate it, carefully choose a correct view that will cover all the annoying islands and coasts, and launch the routing with the option desactivated. You still need the option for "not-routing-outside-screen", but it can also be deactivated in some other tricky cases

@rick thanks for testing this, I can see the crash with CAPE and it's gonna be fixed

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

  • While looking for current gribs, found this link
World wide ocean currents now in grib format
"The process is something like this:
  1. oscar files are generated on a FTP server in NetCDF format
  2. my server checks for updates, downloads them, runs a tool called CDO (climate data observer) and then grib_set from the (GRIB_API package) to configure some of the grib parameters. Then the final world-wide grib file is made availble for saildocs.
  3. emails arrive to query (at) svsarana.com and I parse them, build a custom grib file and email it back."
Find your Lat Long Area
To define a box specify latitude in degrees, say 20N and 10N. Then limit the east-west sides of the box with your latitude, for example 120W to 110W. Use these corners to fill in the OSCAR command: oscar:lat1,lat2,lon1,lon2. In this example the command becomes:
oscar:20N,10N,120W,110W

Next Send the request in the message body to "query (at) svsarana.com"
oscar:20N,10N,130W,120W Note the subject is ignored.

Here is more on how to get the data: How to Get World-Wide Ocean Current Data via Email in GRIB Format-- OSCAR -- NOAA
---

Here is OSCAR OSCAR Near realtime Global Ocean Surface Currents
Oscar also had data download and FTP.

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Sent to query at svsarana dot com with oscar:40N,30N,80W,70W in the body
The sever sent back a file that does not seem to be accepted as grib by qtVlM

"To view this data online see OSCAR Near realtime Global Ocean Surface Currents Data extracted from oscar_vel7443.nc.gz last updated 2013-2-21 16:31"

Take the doc off please. The website says the grib can be viewed in Viewfax which might give a clue why it won't work in qtVlm

Here is a dialogue about the conversion of the OSCAR data and which programs it works in.
