Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Hi,

All versions have been updated to 5.2.2 (windows 64/32, linux 64/32, macOS, Android and iOS)

For iOS the update is not yet available at apple store because it can take several days for Apple to approve it. The previous version for iOS (5.2.1) is available in the mean time.

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

That's great - can't wait to try on IOS.

Just a quick question re: qtvlm - after you've done the routing, the optimized route and isochrons are displayed. When you step through the date / time, the colored isochrons line is highlighted. I find it very difficult to see. Is there any way to change the line weight, color, boldness of the selected isochron line so it is more visible? Even black would be fine!

Thanks,
Don

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Unfortunately no, you cannot change that. I take a note to do something about this in the next release.

And yes it's a great achievement for us to have now qtVlm available for iOS (since a couple of days btw). Note that like Android, full version functionalities (route, routing, anchor alarm and kaps quilting) are available through in-app purchase.

We are now working on an improved nmea module able to receive and display much more message types on more sources like UDP or TCP. That should be ready quite soon.

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

I'm a bit confused over taking an open-source project, porting to iOS and charging $35 in-app purchase for the routing feature. You can't even try it out without buying the full version. The irony of this is all the "Help" links point back to the open-source project, wiki, etc..... I guess I'll be sticking the PC or linux version.

Note, for a bit less, Weather 4D Pro provides similar routing, GRIB downloads and stunningly beautiful weather visualization -and- is much easier to use than qtvlm. I'm a big fan of qtvlm, but the in-app purchase turned me off.

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

I want to clarifying one point: the team behind PCs, android or ios version is the same and has not change for years. Creating an app on smartphone plateform is not free and taking a lot of energy, we are trying to keep a good balance between the two worlds.
Also note that all features that are under in-app are available on computer version so you can fully test them.

One last comment: trial period in iOS world does not exist otherwise we would have been glad to provide it.

Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Hello fellow sailors.

I was wondering where does one get a good free current grib for Western-european coasts, vicinity of the channel.

One that will open in QtVlm that is.

Hello maitai,
that was a great information about sources of current gribs.
Unfortunately there is no current grib of the northsea.
do you have any information where to get current gribs of this region ?
by the way qtvlm is the best nautical tool i ever used

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

unfortunately nothing free that would work in qtVlm. One day maybe we'll have our own grib server and that will be much better.

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Version 5.3.0 has been released

It includes:
- AIS module
- mbtiles module
- Possibility to connect to several NMEA sources at the same time
- Some more gribs supported
- TWD instrument that was missing in previous version
- Various new options for grib interpolation, default crank duration, etc
- Possibility to create a routing without using vmg formulas (resulting in a route in ortho mode)
- and quite a few fixes and optimizations as usual

You can find currents grib accepted by qtVlm 5.3.0 here: FMI (Finnish Meteorological Institute), their forecasts are open data. I don't know if it covers the area you are looking for.

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

Detailed hour by hour tidal current gribs for Irish waters which work in QtVlm are available by ftp from marine.ie. Their accuracy at NOC tidal diamond points such as available from Visit My Harbour is high - both can be displayed together in OpenCPN (adjust for UTC as necessary).
My Ocean IBI gribs for the same waters are very inaccurate by comparison, with current speeds near headlands and overfalls sometimes 1/3 of what they should be, making predictions look safe when they are dangerous!

Re: Free Routing Software. qtVlm

I've been unable to upgrade to 5.3. It won't use old map folder, or recognize a new maps download. I've reverted to 5.2-5-patch1.
