Garmin G2 charts of Caribbean

1) How good are they? I have NOAA charts of some areas, Imray-Iolaire of others. And will try to obtain BA charts of some areas for use with Open CPN (raster).

2) Just curious: if you sail off the chartplotter chart, what happens exactly? How does it affect AIS plots?

Re: Garmin G2 charts of Caribbean

Apparently, no one has an opinion about Garmin digital charts for the Caribbean and no one has ever "out-sailed" their chartplotter.

This is weird. In 10 years on the forum, never had a post completely ignored.

Re: Garmin G2 charts of Caribbean

From memory, the display will switch to the basemap, but will still output Nmea data. You should be able to simulate this on your chartplotter manually.
To answer the first question, download free Homeport, which will display locked charts, and borrow/download copy. (Will not work on your plotter) If you like it you can buy it online.

Re: Garmin G2 charts of Caribbean

I've used Garmin G2 and G2 Vision charts in my chartplotter all over the Caribbean, and have found them very accurate. I use a Garmin chartplotter (4210), and their AIS 600 transceiver, and AIS information is displayed on the plotter and on a seperate list of all AIS vessels within range. Maybe I'm not fully understanding your question...

Re: Garmin G2 charts of Caribbean

Thanks.
Bob: what I meant was if I don't have the Garmin charts loaded for a particular area, will some rudimentary AIS information still display on the chartplotter?

Without knowing your electronics system, I couldn't give you an answer to that question.

Re: Garmin G2 charts of Caribbean

Ah, I see you are using Open CPN. There are some experts on this forum on Open CPN, I'm not one of them Hopefully one of them will answer your questions. Good luck.
