Garmin GPS HandHeld 86s - route plotting

Many years ago the Garmin website let you develop a route with waypoints then you could export to a GPS device. My GPS hand held screen is too small for planning and would require constant panning. Is there a way to accomplish route planning from a PC then export to GPS.. I seem to be searching with no luck - Maybe it's not possible any longer. I have garmin charts, navionics subscription but would prefer to plan from the comfort of a large monitor.

Yeah, Garmin killed all the useful tools
I still have a copy of their old Homeport software, and it still works great (not sure if 86 is compatible) but Homeport is long discontinued and not available.

OpenCPN allows the export of GPX files, and direct transfer to some GPS's, but I don't know which will work. So, I think OpenCPN is your best bet for offline planning right now.
