As a test,I calibrated and converted the attached .kap map for Lindesnes (S.Norway) stretching over two laptop screens.

1. A large GE background was captured in Firefox using Google Maps for FSX and Screengrab plug-in.

2. Displaying the same area/scale in OpenCPN using CM93,I captured the available screen area in OpenCPN twice, one under the other and joined them together.

3. Using Gimp2 I converted the CM93 map to a 127 col. .gif file and entered transparency to all land areas before saving the .gif.

4. Loading the large GE background map,I then opened the CM93 map as layers and used the 'Gimp2' tools to zoom and adjust to fit the GE map and saved as a .png.

5. Used 'MapCalII' and a CM93 map open in OpenCPN in order to calibrate the map and finally used 'Chartconvert' to produce the end .kap chart.

The result is an overlaid .kap chart larger than the screen with no need for further tiling.

OK I have uploaded a new Beta V2.1.1. This one should
fix the finding the "Save As" window on all Windows
versions. Please try it and give me feedback:
gdayii.ca/Downloads

After reviewing your suggestions I think I have a
solution to handle overlaying images other than a KAP
chart. Here it is:

1. I will change the Overlay field to allow .TIF images
(others later). If you select a TIF file it will display
a field where you will enter the name of a file that
contains waypoints for the lat/lon of the upper left (UL)
and bottom right (BR) corners. This file can be in GPX
or SRW (SealClear), G7T or KML format. Also a checkbox
that says "Make Vector chart land color transparent".

2. When you press Create Kap, GE2KAP will read in the
waypoint file then it will resize and position the image
as it does now for a KAP chart overlay.

3. Here is how it would go down:

a. Display the image on your navigation program
b. Clear all waypoints
c. Put wayponts in the upper left and lower right
d. Save the waypoints to a file
e. Do a Screen print and then paste it into an image
program such as Paint or whatever you choose.
f. Crop the image to have an image with the waypoints
in the corners.
g. Save the image as a TIF file.
h. Start GE and display the area that you want to
overlay the image on.
i. Start GE2KAP and fill in the name of new chart to
create, the overlay file and the waypoint file.
j. Press Create Kap.
k. If necessary Redo with new positions.

Sounds a bit messy but I think its doable. It would be
nice if OpenCPN had an option to save the screen image as
TIF file and at the same time a waypoint file with the
lat/lons of the corners. Maybe a new feature request or
someone coud create a plugin to do this.

Any Comments or suggestions?

One thing I'm still trying to figure out is the color of
the land area on a Vector chart so I could make it
transparent for the overlay. Does anyone to how to find
the RGB values of that color?

Paul..

Haven't had time to try out the new beta as yet but will do asap.

The RGB values are as follows:

1. The original (beige) color R 201 G 186 B 123
2. Basic color after removal of all 'Mariners standard' land items:
(grey) R 183 G 180 B 164 The active items table attached.

What is your present port?
Isn't 'Whitey' the name for a baby kangaroo?

Paul..

Regretfully,NO, did not work even creating a .kap chart from the GE map.
Instead it created a .jpg and a .bmp file although I didn't tick the box.

HMMMM very strange. Works like a charm on both my onboard computers.

One thing I notice is different is the level of oorexx. I'm now at 4.1.0 and sailofF54 is at 4.0.1.

Would you please upgrade to latest level at:

Open Object Rexx

Tore and r.fairman thanks for the color info.

I'm now in Belize. Heading out again this morning and no internet for couple of more days (living like an animal).

SailorF54,

I dropped back to 4.0.1 and it still works but wouldn't it hurt to upgrade, it only takes a few minutes.

Can you tell me what you see when you run the beta version. When you press the Create Kap it should bring GE to the foreground and be maximized (you should not at this time see GE2KAP) . It then should bring up the Save As window and enter the filename.

Thanks

Tore,

You seem to have slightly different symptoms . Could you post your log and also tell me what you see exactly. thanks

Paul..

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding something here..
1. I save the GE display map as Lindesnes.jpg
2. In GE2KAP I enter the same file name Lindesnes.jpg which is to be converted to .kap but I get the attached error message saying it should be a .kap? How is that possible as the conversion has not yet taken place? I haven't even started entering the overlay option.

There are two reasons for it. From many reports on a French forum and my own experience it is not possible to install oorexx 4.1.0 (Windows 32 bits 4.1.0) even when making sure xrapi.exe is NOT running (checked many times by different users). Also a trojan worm is often reported (Avira AFIAC)...
The previous GE2KAP ran fine with oorex 4.0.1, so I did not bother to report.

latest version of GE2Kap with latest Rex

Usining the latest version of CE2Kap and ltest version of REx it all worked flawlessly

As a note the latest version is asking you to open GE in the view you want and then run I am assuming the program is screen capturing from GE and saving the jpg for processing. The resolution is at screen resolution and has limited zoom capabilities. The previous version allowed you to save your own JPG. I have found that a tiling program(Google Satellite Maps Retriever) will capture a Jpg that will allow zoom to the maximum which translates to a max zoom capability in the kap file Just a thought is is possible to accomodate both
