Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Hello:
I hope I'm not muddying the waters by tacking onto this thread.

I have been using OpenCPN for a full season now (many thanks to the developers) and have recently tried incorporating the Google Earth GE2Kap capability. I came very close to succeeding, but now have the problem that Open CPN no longer displays on my screen. The software initiates and Task Manager (XP) says it is running, but nothing appears.

I have tries reinstalling OpenCPN (not a complete uninstall-reinstall, didn't want to loose prior years logs), but to no avail.

Short of uninstalling-reinstalling Opencpn, GE2KAP and oorexx what additional steps can I take?

If you see it on your task bar, right-click and choose "Maximize". However, if you try to click it back to smaller-than-screen-size, it will disappear again.

If the above doesn't work, there are a couple of threads in the OpenCPN sub-forum that tell how to go in and edit the offending numbers in the .ini file.

By the way, the shotgun approach would be to just uninstall and re-install OpenCPN. No need to mess with the other two.

And just in case you're the type that likes to know details, the problem is that somehow the numbers are getting corrupted that tell OpenCPN where on the screen the window was located last time. It is using those numbers and faithfully drawing the window off-screen somewhere.

After you get the OpenCPN issue sorted out you might be interested in some help with using GE2KAP and OpenCPN.

I was certain I had gone down that road many times before crying for help, but your suggestion to use the Maximize option worked first time. I don't need to uninstall-reinstall OpenCPN. All is good. Thankyou....... Mike

Thanks for the heads-up about your on-line help for using OpenCPN and GE2KAP. I just took a quick look and have bookmarked the material for reference when we move back aboard in 10 days. It looks like it might save me from myself when I try to blend Google Earth and OpenCPN.

I don't understand what you mean by 'blending' GE and OpenCPN.

GE2KAP uses OpenCPN to define areas of charts (vector and raster) that are further manipulated by GE to correct charts and/or create KAP charts with user-defined transparency. These KAP charts are displayed by OpenCPN when desired, obviating the need to be online with GE or using previously saved GE caches which is necessary when using the GE plugin of OpenCPN.

You have said it more eloquently than I did. Not having been successful in incorporating a KAP chart into OpenCPN, I visualized overlaying KAP charts derived from GE onto Open CPN for a specified area or in my terminology "blending" KAP into CMap charts.

please help me
i have open cpn last version with cm93. I also have charts bsb, kml, e09, j07 etc, but neither works. i try to convert it withbsb2tif but i don't understand how to do it. also i want to be able to use view from google hearth, i tried to follow thew post from phiggins but it is difficult to understand. could you please help me, i am right now in mexico and plan to go belize and guatemala next week

First make sure you have set up the Charts area as per the attached example. Opencpn will read CM93,.kap .bsb and all free US charts.

Converting charts from .tif and .jpg to .kap is another matter but easy when you have learned how.

hello, i am able to view on open cpn cm93, *.bsb, *.kap. Now i want to be able to view the type of chart contain a directory CHARTHDR containing *.hdr and *.A01 and other directory like M0012450, i think it is BSB chart but i am not sure because i don't see no extension bsb.
also i can i use libbsb, i intall it in the directory plugin, then what else did i need to do ??

Sorry, but you can't use the hdr and *.A01 charts in OpenCPN. Those are old maptech charts.

Well I'm back. Another winter sailing trip is over.

I have just uploaded a new version of GE2KAP V9.2.6 that fixes some problems for computers with larger display dimensions. It also has a new French Help file with some FAQ... Thanks Gilletarom.

It unfortunately does NOT fix the Google Earth V6.2 problem so you will have to use GE V6.1. The problem is that Google is dropping support for the API that I use. In V6.2 they seemed to have dropped just one function but I suspect they they will eventually drop it all.

Yep. I've managed to have 6.1 and 6.2 installed and can run them both...
