Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

There are two different plugins. The one for OpenCPN's GE feature is a blue globe like GE. The one for GE2KAP is a redswirl.

If you don't see my GE2KAP plugin you probably didn't follow the Help instructions and either didn't copy ge2kap_pi.dll into the opencpn\plugins directory or you didn't enable it in the OpenCPN Options...Plugins.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Its best to create a folder call GE2KAP on your C drive then create subfolders for each of the versions. So for the last version you would put it in C:\GE2KAP\V9.7.3

As to your problem: you say you have copied the ge2kap_pi.dll into the ...\opencpn\plugins directory. Have you then started openCPN and opened the Options...Plugins and seen if the GE2KAP plugin is there? It should say its 1.4.

If its not there send me the opencpn.log, you can see where its located by opening the Help (Options ?).

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

One of the biggest complaints for new users of GE2KAP is that it seems too complicated. To address this, Gilletarom and I have been working a new version that simplifies the appearance of GE2KAP. We are now ready to have others test it.

If you are interested in testing the new version, please send me an email.

I have uploaded to my website: www.gdayii.ca/Downloads and get GE2KAP.V10.0.0.o.zip

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

Thanks SailorF54.

The new version has an improvement on the Polygon/Path feature. You can now use opencpn to overlay the chart(s) on OpenCPN on GE. So you can specify an area using a route or kml file and create all the charts for the area which the navigation program will quilt together to seem like one large chart.

You can see how this works by specifying C:\GE2KAP\Help\Sample_KML\perth.gpx (assuming GE2KAP is installed in the C:\GE2KAP directory) in the Polygon/path: field. Select opencpn in the overlay field. Press Create Chart then select the range (recommend you try 15000 meters for first test otherwise it will produce a lot of charts for smaller ranges.

PS: you have to be at OpenCPN V3.2.2 for this to work.

PPS: You should also check "Bypass GE Image Edit" so it doesn't stop for each chart.

It will produce something like this on OpenCPN with all the charts quilted together. You can see the outline of the perth.gpx route in blue.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

FYI: anyone trying to create charts that cross the International Date Line (IDL) , Google earth seems to have fixed their problem of not loading an image properly that crosses the IDL.

So now GE2KAP is able to create a chart using an overlay that crosses the IDL. It works on:

Google Earth
7.1.1.1580 (beta)

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

When I used GE2KAP the dark background color from Google Earth made my routes almost impossible to see, particularly when there is any background light. Paul Higgins wrote to me and told me how to reverse the image, so that the background was light and the printing and foreground was light. All I had to do was check the "final output" box and this allowed me to edit the image with my text editor, view.exe or ifranview.exe.

I tried the output with four different charting programs, open cpn, coastal explorer, maxsea, and The Capn. The Capn far outperformed all of the other charting programs. The quilting on the others did not seem to work properly, but it worked flawlessly on The Capn. I highly recommend The Capn. I have been using it for the last 13 years and keep finding that it is superior to the other charting programs available.

Re: Google Earth to BSB / KAP

I have a new version of GE2KAP that is easier to install and use. I'm presently waiting for my translators to update their documentation before releasing it but I could use a few more testers.

If you would like to test it use this link to download it:

www.gdayii.ca/Downloads/GE2KAP.msi

Then install it like a normal windows program. It will put a shortcut on your desktop and in the Start menu.

The default install folder is: C:\GE2KAP\GE2KAP.V.10.0.0.1\ but you can change that during the install but don't put in the "Program Files" or Program Files (x86)" folder.

Any feedback would be appreciated.
