GPS III readies for launch

The first of a new GPS constellation has arrived at Cape Canaveral.

Known more technically as GPS Block IIIA, the 10 satellites are the first segment of what will eventually replace the current constellation of 24 GPS satellites.

This first satellite is scheduled for launch in this December and the last of this block to be launched sometime in 2023. Current estimate for all 24 satellites to be placed in orbit is late 2020s.

First thanks for the information, great stuff.

To the smart guys in the room —— the end of the second article discusses that certain older design GPS devices will no longer work. I am assuming that is 10 years out?
