Gulf Stream Model Validation

Next time you are offshore fishing in the Gulf or Atlantic, check your drift vs this weather data site. Wondering how accurate the reverse current off Carolina/Georgia coast is.

Re: Gulf Stream Model Validation

It is not always there, or always very strong, but that counter current is certainly real. The model that website uses is probably a bit over-estimating its strength however. It is certainly higher than every other model I use.

Re: Gulf Stream Model Validation

In the last few weeks I was in both the Gulf Stream (off Canaveral) and in the counter current (off St. Simons). In the stream I estimated 3 knots current. Off St. Simons I was drifting in zero wind, 1-1.2 knots SW toward Brunswick. Part of that may have been tidal, but I was 16 miles off shore.

Re: Gulf Stream Model Validation

The stream has gyres and back eddies. Chris Parker helped us play them to the good, Hampton to BVI off Hatteras. Even so, crossing we estimated about 3 with the boat crabbing around 45 degrees.

Also see Windy and Copernicus. Windy uses NESDIS data. Copernicus data is downloadable in GRIB format for display by GRIB viewers.

Amazzing ! 3 knots one way and 100 meters away 1.5 in the opposite direction .
both streams moving around in 125 feet of water 25 miles off Brunswick and blowing
35 to 45 knots. No wonder the seas are so irregular. Mike Pope
