How can I select any AIS target as own ship on OPENCPN?

Dear sirs,

How can I select one AIS target as own ship on OPENCPN? If it can do, it would be very helpful to me. I can use portable AIS receiver and act as VTS function on OPENCPN.

Best Regards and thanks.

Re: How can I select any AIS target as own ship on OPENCPN?

Kent,

I'm sure this will be answered faster in the OpenCPN forum here.

But I am not sure I understand the question correctly. Do you want to have all "own ship" functions to be available for a selected AIS target? That is, to be able to automatically follow the chart for it, to be able to see the CPAs as this appears from that ship, etc?

If so, I think it is not possible directly now, but some filtering of the AIS stream, and feeding the selected ship position back to OpenCPN as own GPS should not be too difficult...

Maybe try the other forum first,

Piotr

Dear Piotr,

Thanks for your guidances.

What I want is totally as you mentioned. I need those functions is for learning ship's handling at port, only under select one AIS target's handling information like ROT/SPD/HEADING/COURSE and her relative position to recommended route, I can more close observing pilots' handling skills.

Is it possible to guide me to filter the AIS stream and feed the selected ship position back to OpenCPN as own GPS .

Looking forward to your guidance and helps.

best regards

Do you need to do this in real time, or perhaps recording a log and replaying it later for analysis would be sufficient?

Re: How can I select any AIS target as own ship on OPENCPN?

As mentioned above, I have a AIS receiver, I hope it can show all information of my handling ship in real time when I am working.

I know plug in "VDR" can record a log and replay it later, but I hope it can function to show the distance and bearing of the appointed AIS target(as own ship) to relative landmark for analysis.

If I have to select one, I hope it would be used in real time.

Looking forward to your assitance.

Thanks and best regards

Re: How can I select any AIS target as own ship on OPENCPN?

This might perhaps be sufficient for your needs...

Under Windows I have used an additional tool - the Nmea Router (can be found at: NMEA Router ). I have no real AIS receiver connected at the moment, so I tested with a network feed.

The Nmea Router, when configured for a given MMSI as ownship, will replace the VDM messages for it with VDO messages on output. If there is no parallel GPS input, OpenCPN 3.x seems to work fine, assuming the viewpoint of the selected ship.

However, OpenCPN will show position, course, speed, and CPA's, but no rotation and no other data as published by AIS.

Here is a sample configuration for external network feed I used. Many other are possible. NMEA Router documentation specifically describes the ways to connect with OpenCPN.

This is how it feels to have two tugs assist me with docking...

PjotrC,

Sorry for my belated replay! Thanks for your further guidance.

I found I didn't set up the route direct, so I could not get the feed back strings, I will try again on 12nd/DEC at Kaohsiung port again then come to you soon.

Again, millions thanks for your kind guidance!

PjotrC,

Sorry for my belated replay! It works now!

It seems output setting has to be set as UDP instead of Serial.

Millions thanks with best regards
