How fast does the Earth move?

How fast does the Earth move?

It rotates on its axis, revolves around the Sun, moves throughout the Milky Way, and gets carried by our galaxy all throughout space.

Although we barely feel it at all, planet Earth is moving relative to every other object in the Universe: through the Solar System, the galaxy, and the Universe at large. At each scale, as we zoom out, there's an incredible amount to learn about our motion through the cosmos, and we can even measure what it cumulatively adds up to. Whenever you ask how fast we're moving, it's vital to ask, "Relative to what?" After centuries of advances in astronomy, we finally know the answer [627 ± 22 km/second?], on all cosmic scales.

How, exactly, does planet Earth move through the Universe?
The Solar System isn't a vortex, but rather the sum of all our great cosmic motions. Here's how we move through space.

Or at least that's what we think at this present time. One thing I have found when it comes to astronomy and physics is that not only do we often have to change the rules, but we keep moving the goal posts too.

And not only that, we keep finding new goal posts !

Everyone knows the earth is flat and is perfectly still and everything moves around it. I almost fell off the edge the other day but who knew that barstool was so close to the end of everything.

If the Earth was flat, cats would have pushed everything off the edge by now.
