Re: Ipad Apps for Boaters

Other devices (Android, Meego) can use a Joiko Hotspot app, similar to the Apple Personal Hotspot. These are great apps! By far the easiest way to tether.

On board, however, we have a built-in Globesurfer III access point -- put in a TMobile sim with unlimited data plan. And all devices on board can connect over Wifi. It's better than tethering with your phone, because the reception is vastly better than a phone (it's a fixed device with a bigger antenna and no power restrictions). I bought an external antenna to put up the mast but have yet to install it -- the built in antenna works astonishingly well -- good reception miles out to sea when mobile phones on board have long lost their signals.

In the UK, unlimited data is ridiculously cheap -- IIRC six months for 25 pounds, and with quite reasonable fair use policy -- 500 megabytes per month I think, which has always been plenty for us.

That's 25 pounds for six months, not 25 pounds per month

Here in Panama I buy 1 GByte data for 30 days for $15.- prepaid, no contract! Can also buy 1 day for $1.- and several steps in between. When you reach the 1GByte limit, it just keeps working but becomes slower.

cheers,
Nick.

The whole world seems to have cheaper mobile data than the U.S. And with fewer strings attached!

Yes.. The no contract part is of course a requirement for me, besides the regular tin foil hat precautions

ciao!
Nick.

Settings / General / Network / Set Up Personal Hotspot

At least for my account, I'd need to pay $20/month extra to allow it. I guess there are other services possible. Then again, I think my data plan is $25/month and that's where the $45/month came from with the tethering option. It's really the same thing that I have access to.

Hmm I don't have it. I have no contract, I paid $850.- to Apple for an unlocked phone so I can put any SIM card in. It's not a problem because I don't need it, but it might help others prevent an expensive wrong assumption

Wifi data is so cheap here that I just buy SIMs for $1 each and pop them in any device that will take them... Buy some airtime prepaid when needed, done.

ciao!
Nick.

The phone model is MD260LL. It's the maxed-out 4S.

ciao!

To have a hotspot with an iphone 4 - 4s, don't you need to be on a 4g network?

Re: Ipad Apps for Boaters

1. You don't need a 4G network to have tethered connectivity with another computer.

2. For these v 5's without the Settings / General / Network / Set Up Personal Hotspot, are they iPhone's from AT&T?
