iPad Navionics App doesn't seem to access GPS

I downloaded the Navionics App for my gen 4 iPad, but for some reason it never seems to update our location via the GPS until I do a complete hard reset on the tablet. As soon as it goes to sleep in power saving mode, it requires a reset to update. It is a bit frustrating.

Am I missing something? I was under the impression that the later iPad models had an on board GPS receiver in them and did not require an internet or mobile connection to update locations. Am I mistaken?

Re: iPad Navionics App doesn't seem to access GPS

No WiFi only iPad carries a GPS. Only the 3G/4G models have GPS as it's part of the 3G/4G chipset. It uses the Cell towers to speed up the process of getting a Fix.
For WiFi only models there are some commercially available bluetooth models available but I'm not sure if they will cooperate with the Navionics App.

Re: iPad Navionics App doesn't seem to access GPS

Hi
I went through the same WTF, when I found this out. Only the 3g models have gps.

After some research I bought the XGPS150A bluetooth GPS receiver and it works a treat with Navionics on my ipad

Best Wishes

David

Re: iPad Navionics App doesn't seem to access GPS

It is better to set Location Services to "When App Is Active", rather than "Always".

That way, the app releases the GPS when it is in the background not being used. This saves considerable power and increases battery life.

Re: iPad Navionics App doesn't seem to access GPS

I know this is thread drift but related.......

I have an iPhone with GPS an iPad without, is there someway I can make the iPhone a hot spot and have the GPS services appear on the iPad??

Or maybe have the iPad be a remote screen to the iPhone??
