Re: IPad Pro 12.9 For Navigation Reviews

Another consideration for iPads is their secondhand value. I sold my three year old iPad Pro and pencil for 47% of their new price online. Cost was therefore NZ$250 per year, which compares rather well with alternatives.

Re: IPad Pro 12.9 For Navigation Reviews

I have a new to me 9.7 with data but only 32 mb.

Does anyone use one as a plotter. My concern would be not having enough capacity. How much space would charts take up. I am presuming you have tp down load them from somewhere. Or you might end up like the Humber Pilot.
Yes I am stupid enough to not know if it will still work outside of cell range.

My boat does have older Furuno, GPS and RADAR which probably can’t be intergrated but a chart would be nice.

I can see it well enough to post BS on the internet if I’m wearing my glasses.
I am new to IPad though so not entirely sure how to work it.

Re: IPad Pro 12.9 For Navigation Reviews

I’ve a iPhone6 with 128gb. I use iNavEx and raster charts.

Canadian charts for most of Newfoundland/ last Lawrence Seaway
All of USA eastern region
Bahamas Explorer
NV for the Eastern Carib down to Grenada

10.11 gb used in iNavEx

Now that 32gb, is that free or does that need to support the operating system also?

Re: IPad Pro 12.9 For Navigation Reviews

32gb should be fine. I only have a few hundred (raster) charts but still SEAiq only consumes a total of 0.5gb for me. Even with thousands you’re not going to have a problem. I ran short on space because I hold a lot of music on this iPad, along with dozens of magazines on Readly, and it’s our cabin tv so has a fair number of tv series on it too. For that reason I’ve bought a 256gb version this time, but if you’re not storing video you’ll be fine.

The os is within that 32gb, but only a tiny proportion of it.

I run navionics on the iPad Pro 9.7. It’s in a life proof case, mounted to the helm, with a dedicated lightening cable ran to it for charging.

Can’t say enough good things about it. Recently while 100 miles offshore we experienced a full electrical failure which took out all of our instruments, including dedicated chart plotter. Sure was nice to have an independent system still running.

Great for night sailing too. I just want to note that in the iPads backlight can be adjusted for night conditions in the Settings / Accessibility / Display Accommodations / Reduce White Point (and also in the Colour Filters if red colour works for you). You can control these features using the home button if you add some settings in Settings / Accessibility / Accessibility Shortcut.

Thanks
The system is part of the 32 so it takes up about a 3rd of or a bit more.
I haven’t figured it out yet. But if it can why not.
Perhaps I should have got the 128 but I just got the basic one.

The entire east coast and Bahamas take up about 5Gb in Navionics, You should be fine with 32 if you don’t have a bunch of pics and music

I only have 13Gb of usable memory on my 3rd generation iPad, but I run iSailor with charts of the English Channel from Belgium to Brest, and Brest to Lisbon. I don't have lots of video or audio downloads, though.iSailor works fine out of cell range. You only need cell or WiFi coverage to update or purchase charts. You need a GPS-capable one, of course.

Well, trying to learn how it works before relying on it for navigation puts you well ahead of the Humber folk. From reading the report I suspect they didn't even have a model with a GPS chip. Do remember to keep it in airplane mode once past cell range so you don't run down the battery.

On my phone, the 175 charts for "San Francisco to Cape Flattery" take up 273 MB, but I'm assuming you actually have a 32 GB model. I have no idea what app those guys were using, but SEAiq downloads them and thus has no need to remain "in range" unless you're trying to pull AIS data via the internet.

Regarding brightness, SEAiq also has built-in options to adjust the screen for dusk or night; I found it much more useful than trying to adjust the main screen brightness.
