Another GPS unit for iPad/iPhone use with Bluetooth capabilities is the Dual Universal GPS Receiver. There is a benefit to having a separately powered GPS receiver that can be located in an optimum location for satellite reception. Not only does it not contribute to shorter battery life of your iDevice, it continuously acquires sat signals, even when your iDevice in sleep mode. The rechargeable battery is advertised to have an 8-hour life. I have a small solar charger (~2" x 5") which appears to be capable or recharging the unit.

I'm new to the iPad and it's associated nav apps. I've downloaded the pla2nav app and hope to test it as a redundancy unit to my current on board GPS and chart plotting systems. As I stated, I'm new to the iPad and it's nav uses, so I will be interested in feed back and tips from others on the forum.
