Laptop to tablet with PocketCloud

PocketCloud allows you to take full command of all your laptop/PC programs from your Android tablet over normal wi-fi network, with or without internet connection.

I was running it most of today while my internet connection was down.

Using Open CPN on an Android Device in 10 minutes or less.
It's dead dog simple but requires that you have a computer already running Open CPN and a wifi network onboard. The network does not have to be connected to the internet.

Download Pocketcloud from Googleplay and install. It's free. Download the PC version to your PC and install. It's also free. Log in to your google account.

That's it. Now you can see and control *any* program or files on your PC from your android including Open CPN. This works with many platforms and seems to be incredibly versatile.

Please feel free to discus related topics here. Also note that the thread has *not* been dedicated so pretty much discus anything.

Re: Laptop to tablet with PocketCloud

I am using Pocket Cloud to control my PC from my iPad, works slick. My question is how to do this on my boat. Sinbad7 you stated "You need wifi network onboard and it doesn't have to be connected to the internet" I assume the WiFi hardware plugs into the PC, what is the lowest power & cost alternative hardware I need to do this?

By "wifi network on the boat" do you mean the two devices communicate wirelessly with each other?
Or does one need a separate wifi router, (whether connected to the Internet or not)?

Re: Laptop to tablet with PocketCloud

Sinbad7 said "You need wifi network onboard and it doesn't have to be connected to the internet" and I am asking him what hardware he uses (router etc) to do that when at sea. I'd like it to be USB powered if that is possible. That is what I meant by lowest power consumption. I'm trying to limit the number of AC plugs-ins to my small DC powered inverter.

T.Baker

You can purchase a relatively inexpensive USB pendrive router for your laptop, then you will also
have internet in the marinas.

Thanks Tore I will look into getting one. I am currently using a waterproof daylight viewable remote monitor in the cockpit but it has seen too many sea miles and I am looking for a backup system. The USB WiFi router, and Pocket Cloud software running on my iPad & laptop should do the trick. Just need to research waterproof iPad cases as I don't trust ziplock bags.

Tbaker..

To avoid having to find the special finger sensitive protection bags,I am using a bluetooth mouse, avoiding the need to touch the screen. Easier to protect the mouse in a small bag.

Teamviewer, pocketcloud, splashtop remote... They all do remote desktop within a (WiFi) network without an internet connection. There are a dozen others too.
