Lowrance Elite 7x Chirp

Hello all
I am pondering on making a crossing to the Bahamas in my Thompson 29' Torrent. One item I need is a chart plotter. Lowrance Elite 7x chirp. Is this one sufficient ? I have looked at these in the stores and they seem to have a lot of good data for that area right out of the box. Most likely, I would cross in a Bahamas fling, but I still need one. Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks for input

Re: Lowrance Elite 7x Chirp

Hi
Have a look at the FURUNO GP1870F 7" colour GPS Chart plotter / fish finder. It's a serious bit of kit.
I'm a keen fisho and cruiser, and this is the unit for me, mind you I come from the Land Down Under.

Cheers

Shane & Tracey

P.S sorry about the late reply

Re: Lowrance Elite 7x Chirp

I purchased an Elite 7 CHIRP at West Marine on Long Island in June and it died on day 3. Firs it froze and then worked on repowering. later that day it froze and would not retsart; stopped at Elite 7 screen. West Marine in Saybrook, Ct replaced it, no hassle. This one died, same problem on day 1. West Marine in (sorry forget where, but Ct or Rhde Is) took it back and I purchased an Elite 5 CHIRP. Excellent service by West Marine. Been using the Elite 5 for about 10 sailing days, no problems.

My advice: use the ELite 7 CHIRP for a while before you have to depend upon it.

Re: Lowrance Elite 7x Chirp

I had a Raymarine Dragonfly on my last boat and was extremely pleased with it. I mostly used it as a bottom machine, but it was a much better plotter than I expected too.
I think they are similarly priced, might want to see which one has better charts?
