Warming in the arctic is causing slowing in the jet stream which allows the polar vortexes to spin south.
All the melting in Greenland is stalling the thermohaline circulation. Which basically means the Gulf Stream is being weakened and the northeastern US and Northern Europe will have colder winter weather while the earth overall becomes warmer.

Ergh....every person who had any formal training in navigation or map and compass use? Or anyone who read Bowditch in the past hundred years?

I would submit that anyone who was not aware that magnetic poles are constantly changing, is unqualified to navigate a boat or plane, and should stick to railroad trains, where compass bearings are less of an issue.(G)

As to navigating, no problem mate. Just use a corrected chart. Reference image below, albeit this southern orientation map with the present magnetic pole configuration would in fact needs its compass rose inverted.

After all our "North Pole is presently in fact the north facing pole, it is magnetically a south pole. Note use of capital for place and lower case for denoting magnetism.

As to a temporary loss of the protection of the earth's magnetic field that could be a big problem. One may be in need of some serious UV protection.
The earth's magnetic field serves to deflect most of the solar wind, whose charged particles would otherwise strip away the ozone layer that protects the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation.

There will be a time period perhaps a few decades with multiple poles and greatly reduced field. The solar wind will no longer be deflected which could be extremely harmful.



Without the magnetic field we wouldn't have much of an atmosphere, but it takes much more than the reversal period of a few years to strip it away.

Hahahahaha - Yes, this. But I think the current rate of change is the highlight here. Obviously, this is what Trump and Putin were discussing, and have supressed lest it cause widespread panic amongst the cruising community. So if you see a Russian submarine approaching your marina, do not assume imminent armageddon...prolly just be a bit off course

Once when using my magnetic compass input to my autopilot I noticed from a reputable source that there was considerable magnetic dip in the locale. So why didn't my yacht follow that dip and head undersea eh? Magnetism? It's all a "lode" of rubbish.
My boat goes where SWMBO directs it and that's that.
