Perhaps the boat doesn't have a sat tracker? Or, in my case, I find the technology interesting and I am curious about the performance of sat-AIS.

Re: Marine Traffic AIS-SAT - 1 ship location test

Roland.

Many reasons why family, friends, yacht and ship deliveries,Ocean Regattas etc.
would want to follow vessels across the oceans.

At a price of 50cents a day,it will not break ANY bank.... I would like to know where your ´satellite trackers´ are available at 25cents per day so I can get on their mailing list.

I am aware of SPOT and inReach units for on-board use,but that is another story.

Unless you are on a VERY tight budget, I would always recomment fitting my boat with a Class ´A´ AIS transponder for ocean crossings and round the world voyages.

Re: Marine Traffic AIS-SAT - 1 ship location test

After a couple of days of testing sy Rua Hatu Solo Sailor in the Vendée Global regatta,it would seem we can expect TWO daily, satellite based positions, early morning and early evening, which is really sufficient for a long-distance sailor.

As we get further along,we shall see if this pattern holds true.
You will of course also get ALL AIS-TER based positions when within the reach of internet.

Marine Traffic also lets you see ALL AIS-SAT locations with violet colored vessels (pleasure craft) albeit without any info. Pointing the mouse on any vessel will show it´s position in the top right corner of your screen. See attached screen-shot.

See also the results for the Vendée Global regatta as of Nov 15 at 08:00 UTC attached.

Re: Marine Traffic AIS-SAT - 1 ship location test

Here are the latest positions of TWO selected vessels in the Vendée Globe Regatta today Nov 19.

One, the sy PRB Solo Sailor with a Class ´B´transponder receives it´s position via AIS-SAT from Marine Traffic at worst TWICE per day, although we missed ONE day earlier. When that happens,we can read it´s position from the Vendée Globe fleet progression page which is based on their closed, national French Satellite System.

Without the backup of the French satellite system used by Vendée Globe,we would have to use ESTIMATED locations based on the vessels course, speed and time-lapse. So, in my opinion,so far, Class ´B´transponders are still acceptable for at least daily position reports based on the AIS-SAT system from Marine Traffic on cross-ocean voyages.

Bleemus, are you using the Satellite tracking option in Marine Traffic which you generally have to pay for, or the free access?

Re: Marine Traffic AIS-SAT - 1 ship location test

Bleemus. Yes,you have to use the PAID AIS-SAT version to locate the vessels.

The Vendée Globe Regatta uses their own, private satellite AIS system you can only use through their website. You can see both the PRB Solo Sailor and Hugo Boss there. The Hugo Boss does not show up on Marine Traffic as he uses only a special device with the French satellite system.

I am using the Vendée Globe regatta to test the AIS-SAT system of Marine Traffic through PRB Solo Sailor equipped with a standard Class ´B´ transponder.

You can check it out from my Vendée Globe Regatta page on FaceBook:

Are you sure that the Vendée Globe is using private satellite AIS? Most race organizations use an Iridium-based tracker.

Re: Marine Traffic AIS-SAT - 1 ship location test

I have the paid version of Marinetraffic on my Android tablet but not sure if that gives me the AIS-SAT you mention. Hugo (who just collided with an unknown object and damaged a foil) must just be running a AIS receiver for collision avoidance.

Re: Marine Traffic AIS-SAT - 1 ship location test

Bleemus..

You must have the AIS-SAT ´Extension´ in order to set up the container ´My Ships´ and then specify the name(s) of the vessels in your fleet. 1 vessel SAT-AIS tracking cost US$ 15.- per.mnt. Each additional vessel a small reduction.

Most of the Vendée Globe regatta vessels use a special French/NOAA satellite tracking system with their own transponder not readable by Marine Traffic.

However, many of the vessels also have normal class ´B´ transponders.

For testing purposes I have selected 1 vessel, the "Bastide Otio Solo Sailor" for tracking by Marine Traffic´s AIS-SAT service. Doing very well on his Class ´B´ transponder,up to several position detection's per day.

I also upload the official Vendée Globe tracking page and follow the TWO leading vessels, presently "Banque Populaire 8" followed closely by the previous leader "Hugo Boss" with a broken/missing foil, only 1 nm behind. VERY tenacious!!.

NEWSFLASH... As per 17:00 UTC "Hugo Boss" is back in the lead, 0.7 nm ahead of "Banque Populaire 8" WELL DONE Alex Thomson from the UK!!

As you will have noticed I am using OpenCPN with up-to-date GRIB reports.

Re: Marine Traffic AIS-SAT - 1 ship location test

Hi - I know this is an older thread.. but curious in regards to having class B AIS vessels shown on Marine Traffic. Are they (class B) already being received (satellite)but filtered and can only be seen by others that pay the subscription to Marine Traffic?
