Moving South from RI in April

I'm looking forward to moving South from Rhode Island in April, this year. I live on the boat full time now. Should I do a few laps in the New England area until late September, then head South? Or are there decent places down South to wait out storms for a liveaboard?

I'm a bit new to the liveaboard life, so please be gentle. Move this to whatever forum makes sense, I guess. Boat is a Catalina 36 MKII.

You’ve got it backwards. Enjoy the north for the summer. Head down in the fall.

Re: Moving South from RI in April

I knew I was doing something wrong!

It's actually really good advice. I'm on no particular time table. I think I'll change plans and go sail around MA and Maine until fall then head South.

I'm just tired of this snow and ice up in RI at the moment. The marina I'm at has no real facilities to speak of too, which makes the winter a real PITA.

A good timing for going south is to end up in the Chesapeake in early fall. Be in Annapolis for the boat show beginning early Oct. (You can even get a temp job working the show if you want). Then join the crowd heading south down the ICW after the show. By the time you get to Florida the hurricane season has tailed off.

Im going to take a guess, You must be in wickford and you did not shrinkwrap. Its a crapshoot. last winter you would have been much happier as we didn't get any snow. But this winter I would say those that didnt shrinkwrap are getting punished. Especially the melting then freezing overnight to low teens. Pray for warm spring so you can get out. Are you ready to be on the hook? April still gets strong blows so be careful. I plan to sail back up from Beaufort to RI first week in April hoping to squeeze up the coast between the fronts.

Re: Moving South from RI in April

Not in Wickford although I considered it. I got the boat wrapped, I'm just tired of this weather.

The travel restrictions in MA, NH, and Maine are not great. Also I hear the area is littered with crab pots. I guess I could manage the 10 day isolation requirements without too much of a problem.

The advice to head South and end up in Annapolis for the boat show is good. I think I'll do that. Thanks.
